The DASH diet plan provides a wonderful method of sodium reduction while allowing you to eat a variety of foods.
Reducing the sodium to an acceptable level is key to reducing our risk of hypertension and heart disease.

    CuteMommy -

I feel your pain as I cannot seem to get my sodium below 2500 mg each day. I'm on meds to control my blood pressure and the more sosium intake the worse for me. I find it so difficult to find anything low in sodium when eating out - arrghhh!

But, yes, I do agree with you about that darn sodium. I recently posted that I'd like to kick the dude right in the **** who discovered sodium!!! LOL!

Feel free to add me to your friends list - I'd like to continue contact with you.

    Cheers!

Most of your sodium will probably come from processed or packaged foods, making maybe one meal a day from individual ingredients, like a sandwich rather than buying a pre packed one. Something along those lines could help.

I have seen others on this board who say they have lost weight without watching their sodium. However I AM watching my sodium because it helps SO much while trying to lose weight but even then there are days when I do go over. I will gain up to 5 pounds because of the water retention and it takes a few days to get it off again, but I don't worry about it so much. If you want to watch your sodium that means you really have to cut back on the pizza or going out to eat or frozen dinners (they are the WORST even the 'diet' dinners). There are lower sodium options for a lot of things out there that actually taste good! When I want cheese i'll eat reduced sodium cheese, and it is just as yummy as regular cheese. I use a no salt added ketchup and i can't tell the difference. I use kosher salt or lite salt instead of regular salt when I want it added to my meals. It's not easy but you have to make changes to how and what you are eating if you want regulate it. And if you do want to go to jimmy john's (mmmmm... turkey tom is my fav!) make sure the rest of your day is lower sodium so you can account for their high sodium sandwiches.
trust me, it can be done!

Maybe I am one of the few people who doesn't watch their sodium. I do work out hard every day and try to sweat. Some days when I have really gone overboard with sodium (rarely), I retain water for my morning weigh-in. I believe that if you don't have high blood pressure and you don't care too much about retaining water that Sodium has no effect on actual fat loss and muscle tone.

Of all the things I can monitor here I rank them: 1) Calories 2) Protein 3) Fiber 4) Fat 5) Carbs 6) Potassium 7) Sodium. That is what works for me. (And I used to have high blood pressure and high cholesterol before I lost all the weight)

I agree. Sodium has nothing to do with actual weight-loss, only water fluctuation. Women are more sensitive usually, but not always. And sodium has been found to be a factor in high-blood-pressure for only about 15% of the population. If you don't need a restricted sodium intake for other health reasons, don't worry about it too much. (But if you eat closer to nature, you will find your sodium reduces with the decrease in processed foods, which is healthy in so many ways.)

Since January 1st I've only stayed under my sodium goal 3 times. It's really hard to keep down.
