I would rather eat real butter even though its alot of calories. Its good fat and doesn't hurt my liver as much as all the chemicals in margerine. Anyone else agree?

Butter is high in saturated fat, it just happens to be better than margarine, which is high in even worse fat, trans fat. It's a better choice, but it is not good fat. The good fats are the unsaturated ones, poly and monounsaturated fats. You find these in nuts, avocados, and healthy oils, like olive oil.

Totally agree... I think we all have too much of a tendency to look for short cuts that end up risking our health even more. I prefer sticking with butter and just reducing the amount I use, but that's just me.

Tastes better, too... except it's expensive. Calorie-wise, it's supposed to be similar to margarine (I've never actually compared the two...), but if you have to choose one butter is supposed to be much better.
  • I just like the taste of butter better and use it sparingly as well.
Definitely use olive oil for cooking though!!

A better choice would be to buy spread, the stuff that comes in the tub. They have lower saturated fat as well as no trans fat.

Yes. I agree completely. I also eat organic virgin coconut oil...you know, that awful stuff loaded with saturated fat! Good for you for doing your own reasearch and knowing what goes into your body!
  • Butter is not good fat, it's full of saturated fat! I mean compared to margarine but really you don't need either, they're both horrible! Alpha-Linoleic acid and Poly/Monounsaturated, those are good fats!

Same here. I use it in everything! It's shocking we're still alive!

I really like smart balance butter. Lower calorie plus no trans fats.

I substitute grape seed or olive oil any chance I get for butter, but if I'm going to do it, butter ALL THE WAY! Someone told me once that margarine is 3 ingredients short of PLASTIC!, now I don't know if this is true, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. I would rather use butter minimally than margarine, yuck!

I half agree. Butter is not a good fat. It is solid at room tempeture. However, it is natural and your body has a better way of recognizing it and know what to do with it so that is why I prefer it. I use so little of it that I don't worry too much about the calories.

I only use it on my toast in the morning. About 1 pat. Then I would also use it in baking, mashed potatoes etc, which I don't eat that much of.
  • I lost a very close friend to breast cancer, and over the course of a six year fight to beat it, she was told by her dr to only eat butter. My family was already eating just butter due to a son allergic to soy. If you read the box for margerine and fake butter it has many chemicals in it. So do you want chemicals that cause cancer or do you want milk/salt which is butter? I have a hard time understanding the battlebetween good fat and bad fat. If you are really concerned just stop eating the products that are high in the fat you want to avoid.

I love me some organic butter and organic coconut oil. Both solid at room temperature and full of saturated fat. YUMMY. Gosh, guess I should be dead :/

I'm finding out that I can eat any damned thing i want. Butter is awesome but like dynamite...use sparingly and pay attention to what you are doing. MODERATION is the real choice here. AND log IT!

Hydrogenated oils = bad, but butter is still loaded with saturated fats. Just because it's the lesser of two evils doesn't mean it's a good fat. Try using olive oil, full of unsaturated/polyunsaturated goodness :) You can even try a blend of butter and olive oil, if you're looking for the flavor.

It's a real food, so it gets a + in my book. I try to eat clean, so now faux butter crap here. I do try to limit it to an extent though. I do enjoy other fats though such as olive oil and coconut oil. Have you read Nourishing Traditions? Very interesting reading!

If you believe that saturated fat is unhealthy, please do some research on Pacific Islanders who get about half (!) of their TOTAL calories from saturated coconut fat.

Saturated fat does not cause heart disease.

Butter -- real butter, unaltered, deep yellow in color, from grass-fed cows -- is brimming with vitamins and minerals and is GOOD for you. I use it freely on a daily basis. It makes my whole grains and veggies (and steak, on the rare occasions that I eat it) taste amazing, and helps me get full benefit of the fat-soluble vitamins in them.

Polyunsaturated fats (aka vegetable oil, canola oil) are highly processed and are not good for you.

Saturated fat, on the other hand, is a natural occurring fat and they are now proven to be actually good for you. This has all been a big fat lie, so to speak - to feed the low fat agenda.

Yeah, me too and my cholesterol and triglycerides should be clogging my arteries...............Ha ha!!

It is funny that the longer I use full fat products and have went back to using bacon grease for cooking and such my doctor is now asking me to raise my cholesterol.............it is too low now.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

    I so agree with you!!

Also, check out the Inuits (aka Eskimos) who eat a very high fat diet and almost NO carbs.

I talked about this with my doc just last week and he told me that butter (in reasonable amounts) actually helps you to lose fat. He said that margarine is absolutely horrible for you.

It makes me so happy to find others that have done their research! I've eaten this way for years, and at my fittest was 14% body fat (I got lazy about healthy eating for a couple months, and I'm at 19% now, but I'll be back down in no time!) I'm all about eating raw and NATURAL! :)

There is some strange theory about saturated fats from some of you, but to each their own. I like presenting what I know to be fact so that others who are learning about nutrition aren't led down a path I know to be incorrect.

This is a great article straight from the Mayo Clinic on the different types of fat and how they affect our bodies.

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fat/NU00262

I post this so that the facts are straight about different fat types. Having a little butter isn't going to kill you. I don't think anyone here has said that, like some of you seem to think based on your responses. The truth is that saturated fats are not considered the 'good fats'. A lot of doctors would say a little saturated fat is okay, which is true, but I know of no doctor that will tell you that saturated fat is actually good for you and is a good fat. That is just incorrect.

Read the article. It lists the harmful affects of saturated fat. There isn't a medical opinion greater than the Mayo Clinic. I urge you to read. :)

Costco sells bags of individual butter pats. I use one daily with my vegetables.
    I do not fear butter.
    Or whole eggs.
    Or fruit.
Or whatever else everyone seems to be afraid of eating these days. (real food)

I also use olive oil and coconut oil sparingly ... 1 to 2 tsp at a time.

2 books to read ... In Defence of Food by Michael Pollan and Real Food by Nina Planck.
    Don't fear "real" food.

Poor time of year for this little experiment, for me anyway, but something to try and ponder your butter/margarine choice. I'll have butter any day, cream and salt vs chemicals I can't pronounce? yes please.

    Experiment
take 2 teaspoons, one of butter and one of margarine put them outside in your garden for a day, see which one is gone as in is recognized as a food by the insect population and which one is untouched. Put the margarine down.

Does anyone know a national brand that sells REAL butter? Or an ingredient that would tell me its real butter? Sorry for the ignorance but Ive cut artificial stuff out of my diet and nothing on the butter containers jumps out at me saying "Im real butter" lol

I totally agree. Due to the chemicals in artificial butter, we switched back to real butter. Our family philosophy is everything in moderation.

To determine if it is "real" butter, just read the label. It should only list milk or cream and salt (unless unsalted butter).
