Eating out is such a pain calorie wise.

Does anyone have any tips on keeping it healthy?

I try to avoid extra bread.

If I leave anything on the plate the waiter assumes that I didn't enjoy the meal.

Have read doggy bags are good options but its not really done in the UK.

  • I'm in Lincoln UK - and I ALWAYS ask for a doggy bag if I have meat left over - I do have two dogs - but I do get doubtful looks from the waiters sometimes! I look at it this way - it's my meal, I've paid for it and I will take it home with me if I can't manage it all! :) My dogs love it when we've been out to eat as there's usually a treat for them when we get home and at least the restaurant aren't offended by thinking you just left the food because you didn't like it!

Maybe I just need to be more assertive with them.

I'd just ask for a container or if you're really uncomfortable with it, can you bring a tupperware and pack it up yourself?
I'm a waitress in Canada and I'd say 7 out of 10 tables I serve pack food up to take home for lunch the next day. (I pack it for them in take out containers that we have at the restaurant)

When I lived in the UK I rarely had to ask for the restaurant to pack up the leftovers! I think the portion sizes are a little less insane compared to North America, but I could've just been hungrier :P Does anybody else think that the portion sizes are different?

I say, don't worry about what the restaurant staff think! Take it home! I often make dinner choices based on what would be good leftovers for lunch the next day! Like someone said, you could bring your own tuppeware if the restaurant doesn't offer doggie bags.

You could also try substituting chips/fries with salad/veggies. I like to look for a menu/nutritional information online before I go so I can be better informed on what's best to eat, or so I can plan my food-day/exercise calories accordingly.
