Calories at gym..

The machines calculate calories but how accurate are they?!
Basically, you can enter your weight and age.

I normally knock off 10 cals at the end =\.

    Depending on the machine they can overestimate your calories by 10-30%.
  • difficult to say - calories burned are calculated using complicated formulas - Some use weight, some factor in HR, some use assumed data (HR & weight + intensity)

    All in all, unless you put in your weight and age, id say dont lend to much credence to them.

    agreed with others---it depends on how much information they're taking into consideration. The ones at my work are pretty high-end (I work for Hyatt and we have the same machines that our hotels have), so it takes into consideration weight, heartrate (and age too for some workouts I believe), and duration and intensity.

    Best bet from what I hear is to get a heart rate monitor. I'm hoping to steal my mom's since she doesn't use it much.
