Has anyone had a doctor tell them to not worry about calories so much and count something else? I have been struggling to lose weight and my doctor thinks that part of it is that I crave salty foods so much. I eat a lot of low calorie but high sodium foods. She told me not to worry about calories as much and instead to set my goal to be under my sodium count for the day. Has anyone else had to do this?

I have not personally had to do that, but it sort of makes sense. If you are eating lots of high sodium foods, your body is going to retain water (and weight). With that said, I wouldn't go all out and eat whatever you want as long as sodium is low. I think you need to find a fine balance between calories and sodium. And treat yourself once in a while. If you crave something salty, have it. But follow up with tons of water.

i've never been told to do this, but i am a huge sodium freak and i count my sodium and watch it like a hawk. i keep it around 1500mg a day. i think keeping your sodium low is very important, for health reasons, as well as water retention. it is amazing how many foods out there contain so much sodium. once i started incorporating more fresh fruit and vegetables into my diet i saw a huge drop in my sodium :)
