Lateral Slide Training

I got a lateral slide board at Goodwill today, and from the information I have found on the 'net, it is used by speed skaters and hockey players to train in the off-season. You put on these little nylon booties and slide back and forth on it in a skating motion. I did it for about three minutes and my *kitten* is killing me!
Has anyone else used one, or does anyone know a little more about them?
