Net Calories...

What does this mean?! Does anyone know the significance, or indeed, if there is any significance to this? If so, I would really appreciate any explanation...Many thanks :smile:

  • Net calories mean the total calories you consume out of your allotted amount each day. For instance, for breakfast I usually consume 300 calories so that's 300 net calories out of my daily allowance of 1200. And one other thing, MFP automatically creates a deficit already when calculating your calorie goals. For example, for me to maintain my weight, I have to eat 1600 calories a day, but MFP puts my calorie intake at 1200 a day to create that deficit for weight loss. I hope that makes sense.

    At the end of the day, the number in your Net Calories should be EQUAL to the number of allotted calories that you start out with for the day.

    For example, if you are on a 1400 plan, and you eat 300 for breakfast, it will say 300, then you have a 150 snack, now its 450, BUT then you exercise for 200, NOW it says 250! because you added to that deficit, so you have to RE eat those 200. Get that number to match your ORIGINAL calorie goal for the day, which is the same as making the calories on your diary page equal to 0 remaining.

    The goal is to eat them all but not over, as close to 0 as possible. Do NOT make the mistake of thinking you have to eat LESS than that number to lose weight, as that number IS your "lose weight" number, MFP has already subtracted from it when you set your goals initially.

    As mentioned above, your caloric goal has already been determined. If you consume 1200 calories a day, and you burn 500 calories working out then, 1200+500= 1700 calories as your net calories. In other words, eat back the calories you burned. Some times you can't eat all of them back, and that's okay. Just try to get as close to your net as possible otherwise your body will go into starvation mode. Because if you don't eat back your calories burned, you will have a deficit. 1200-500= 700, you will be below your net calories. Your body will hold on to fat in order to prevent it from starving.
