How to deal with the "one-upper"?

I went out to the lot and picked up some really big rocks and put them in a specimen container which I labeled with the patients name and we put them at her bedside. The aunt never said a thing, just keep glancing at them, we had a great laugh later.
Did you really? lolol thats hilarious!!!!!! awesome!0 -
ah yes the one upper. I have 2 friends like this..married to each-other  So we get in a double dose.
Funny thing is in the process of trying to one up everyone.. they have just shot themselves in the foot.. So in the end the "one-upper" will be too busy trying to be better then everyone else that it will get to a point were they end up in major trouble.
We've been slowly weeding them out of our friend circle because everyone is sick of them acting like they are better then us and one upping. So when it all hits the fan they won't have a whole lot of support which is kind of sad in a way but you live and you learn.
enjoy your party this weekend! And don't let her ruin your evening! :drinker:0 -
Did no-one get my root canal joke then?0

I used to work with a guy called Brian, he was exactly as you describe, If I had been to the moon, he'd have a house on it! We called him Bigger Better Brian! I think everyone knows somebody who has this problem... and if you dont know somebody.... maybe its you!0

This thread is hilarious. Sorry I can't one-up any of these stories.0

Just remember that her one-upping is about her wanting to to feel better by making everyone else less than. Its not you its her. Go have fun at your your party and let her make a fool or herself.0

There is a Saturday Night Live recurring character that does this.... so funny.
I love the "game" responses and of course, remembering where this all comes from. When people one-up, it's about THEM and not you. I generally refuse to put much energy into such people so I generally say "How wonderful/sad/horrible/disgusting/green for you" and slowly back away.0 -
A milder form of the "one-upper" is the "me, too." Everytime you have a head ache, she (he) has one too, etc. I usually just don't tell this type of person much. Why give them ammunition for the game! And sometimes my shady side wins out and I Give them misinformation just to see what reaction I get. :devil:0

I've worked with a few of them. Depends on their personalities. One I just laughed at or played the "how ridiculous can they get" game. Another I just called out, looked at him and said "Really!?!, You just have to one up everyone don't you." He got better after that, at least when I was around lol.0

I read this thread earlier today and laughed so hard. Then about ten minutes ago my mom one-upped me! I realized she does it all the time! I guess I don't even think about it anymore. Lol, had to share.0

Start coming up with more and more outrageous things for her to one up.
You "Oh, I had really bad toothache. I was in so much pain."
Miss Not Nice Fake Boobs "That's nothing, I had two root canals yesterday without Novocain!"
You "I climbed the local mountain recently. I was pleased that I could do it.
MNNFB "I climbed Mr Everest and gave the Sherpa advice on how to carry my bags better. They complimented me on my flawless Nepalese."
You "I think I saw a UFO yesterday"
MNNFB "That's nothing, I was probed three times last week by the green aliens, blue rock aliens, and the humanoid aliens. They asked me to be their queen but I told them that Earth needed me too much."
================
Seriously, start coming up with slightly outrageous things and right down on a piece of paper 2 to 4 things that she might say to outdo you. Keep score. Make it a game that only you can win.
Reminds me of the SNL skit with Kristen Wiig.0
