A question for the "clean eating" types

Does your philosophy on wholesome, natural eating also apply to the other products you use (toiletries, household stuff, etc.)? If yes, what are some of your favorites?

As my eating habits become cleaner and cleaner, my overall lifestyle does as well. I really love the packaging-free solid shampoo bars from LUSH, and I have friends who make the delicious-smelling soaps and facial products I use every day. I also no longer buy cleaning products with unnecessary chemicals and find that the natural products actually work *better*.

    Yes! I LOVE Lush.

We buy Method cleaning sprays (cucumber scent is amazing) and Dr. Bronner's all purpose body wash. However, I tried both natural toothpaste and detergent and found they didn't quite give the same fresh/clean feeling. Hmmm.

Which toothpaste did you try? I went through a couple before I found Tom's whole care peppermint gel. I'll never go back.

Deodorant took longer -- I tried no less than *nine* deodorants without aluminum or parabens before finding something that works.

Ooo i'll have to try Tom's! I tried Burt's Bees and Arm and Hammer (which is not totally natural, but more so. I just hated the taste.)

Also this is probably not something I should admit but....I don't actually wear deodorant. I used to wear Dove, and I kept getting cysts. Also, something about all those chemicals going on my skin right after I shave....eek.

My obgyn told me to use a cotton ball to rub alcohol under my arms after I shave every day, and you know what? It works just fine. Maybe it's because I'm a delicate bud but honestly if I shower once a day and do this I don't get funky. (Boyfriend has confirmed this fact) I feel so much better about what's going on my skin--and in my pores and bloodstream--now. And no more cysts or irritation!

I've started using Soap Nuts to clean my laundry - it's the fruit of a tree that has natural cleaning agents in it. Check it out (there are other brands, but this site has good info): http://www.laundrytree.com/about-soapnuts.html

I just recently bought a 2 lb bag off Amazon.com - it should last me quite awhile (400 loads or something like that).

I also made my own shampoo - it's liquidy, not thick like store-brands, but it worked well enough and I liked it.

Jessie - I went to two seminars about toxicity and weight loss and it has made me think about it. I switched to a lot of Burt's Bees stuff for shampoo, face cleaners and lotion. I bought some of their toothpaste too but I didn't like it. I have Tom's deodorant which I alternate with Dry Idea. They also recommended Physician's Formula Organic makeup - they don't have a huge variety (couldn't find eyeshadow) but I bought their tinted moisturizer, blush and mascare (not waterproof though so it runs if I wear it to work out).

There is a local organic skin care place near me so I might start trying some of that tool.

Next up will be getting greener cleaning products. I have heard vinegar and baking soda are great cleaners and are very safe and cheap. I will probably use up what I have for now though.

My sister and I use soap nuts also. I buy them from a local Co-op in a 1 lb bag that comes with 4 little burlap bags to throw in the washer.

My sister makes soap, body wash and shampoo for her household and mine.

I make our cleaning supplies and deliver to her when she needs them.

We have a compost pile that I started last summer so we don't throw away much stuff.

I've heard a lot about these Soap Nuts. I just wish I could find a small sample size somewhere so I don't have to buy a lot to find out if I like them.

Vinegar, baking soda, lemon and water..............Best ever cleaning products.

We also switched to soy based candles in our house also for clean burning or I burn essential oils in a burner.
