What to order at a steak house?

The boyfriend's parents are coming into town this weekend and we're going to a steak house. Ordinarily I'd consider this my cheat meal but I have a cheat already planned for Friday with my girlfriends.
What's should I eat to stay on track, other than a salad? (Salad at a steakhouse, wah wah wahhhh.)
I'm looking to stay under 600 cals for the whole meal. I know I should go for the asparagus instead of the potatoes, etc....but any tips beyond that?

The filet is typically a smaller and less fatty cut of meat...0

I had a 6 oz sirloin at Texas Roadhouse last weekend and that is only about 330 calories. Go for leaner smaller cuts of beef, or chicken if available.0

skip the salad, go with the 6 oz fillet, steamed or grilled veggies (if grilled make sure you tell them NO OIL OR BUTTER), and a sweet potato plain with butter on the side. If they have whole wheat bread, that's fine too. Make sure the fillet comes with no sauce, or au ju on the side.0

A small sirloin isn't too bad either.0

Go for a small cut of meat and steamed veggies. Grilled shrimp or fish is usually available at a steakhouse if you want something low in calories but more 'festive' than a salad.0

just order a small lean steak. it's very healthy & yummy!0

They generally offer a salmon meal aswell, id go wth this!0

Sometimes a salad isn't always the right choice and you are better off going with something that actually sounds better anyway. Most steakhouse's offer chicken or fish also so instead of a steak you could go that route.0

Even an 8oz sirloin at The Keg is 950 calories so there isn’t much you can do but have meat + salad and avoid all fries, garlic mashed potatoes and table bread.
Even the chicken at The Keg is 1050 calories or so, not much help.0 -
I usually get a 6 oz Filet (and share a few bites with hubby), eat half a plain potato (I like my meat med. rare so the juices flavor my potato) and have grilled asparagus. I order straight horseradish and blue cheese on the side for a little treat. The MUST is a big glass of Pinot Noir! And I agree, you DON'T order a salad at a steak house! Most of all, enjoy yourself!0

I don't have anything new to add, really. I would echo what others are saying, go for a leaner cut of meat, and just eat 4 or 5 ounces of it (deck of card sized serving), and save the rest for take home. I love steak! I wish I was going to a steakhouse! Haha! Have fun!0

Here's an idea.. Order a side salad with the dressing on the side and a baked potato. The baked potato will fill you. Make sure you ask for your toppings on the side.0

Most restaurants have a nutritional calculator online you you can decide before you go.
Other than that I have ordered the smallest cut with a veggie or salad option instead of the potato... or a baked potato with only butter and chives (no sour cream or bacon).
I have ordered what I really wanted but only ate half of what they served. Leave the leftovers there!0 -
Thanks everyone, good tips here. I'll let you know how it goes!0

Does the steakhouse you are going to have a website? If so you could check it out and see what you can eat there and stay within your calorie budget. I usually go with a 6oz. sirloin with side salad and steamed veggies and avoid the bread. Sometimes I'll get the chicken instead. If you can't get a steak that small or if everything there is high calories just eat half and take the rest home for later. I had heard this trick over and over and I finally started using it and it makes it so I can eat out with my family and friends and not have to feel like I'm "on a diet" and can only eat salad and I don't feel deprived because I still get to eat foods I like, just not as much. And that means I get to eat them twice!0

Often they will put butter on a steak, so you might want to ask for no butter.0

Last time I went to the keg I had the 7oz filet mignon and aspergus = 518 calories (make sure you say no added butter)
If you dont mind adding more calories you can have a plain baked potatoes or even half if you want to cut down the cals.0
