According to Jillian Michaels Fitness trainger on the biggest loser" One pound of body fat contains approximately 3,500 calories. This means that, in order to burn 1 pound of fat, you must have a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories. Therefore, to lose 1 pound of fat per week, you need to have a 500 calorie deficit each day.
To lose weight, the number of calories burned must be greater than the number of calories you eat. It is that simple. When you have a calorie deficit you will experience fat and weight loss.We can create that calorie deficit in any number of ways. We can eat 500 calories less per day, we can burn 500 extra calories per day through exercise, or we can use a combination of the two. Any combination will lead to fat loss."

So what i gather from what a professional says, you need to have a calorie deficit of 500 a day in order to lose 1 lb a week. I know that they also on the biggest loser do NOT use there extra calories to eat more...it stays the same but you have to keep revisiting your calorie intake as your losing and working out because your needs are going to change because your building muscles which will burn more calories so I'd trust the experts....depending on how much you want to lose, i wouldn't be adding in your calories what you workout.

This is a great theory. Except that *most* people here do not have 100+ lbs to lose (which is about the only time a deficit allowing more than 2 lbs/week is healthy, safe or advisable), and most people here do not have the advice and supervision of docs, nutritionists and trainers. So going by the regimen/diet plan used on BL is not appropriate for most people.

I'm still confused and I don't think I am eating enough. I only have 1300 per day and after working out, sometimes I'm left with as many as 1000 by dinner. There is no way I can eat that many calories in one meal (and I don't want to) without going over in other areas like fat, sodium and sugar. Does anyone else have this problem?
  • I don't eat mine, I see them as having an overdraft with the bank, there if needed but haven't so far ;-)
