gauging effort/calories?

how do i gauge the effort in things like "calisthenics: light/moderate effort" or "vigorous"?
i'm doing work out video's (result's fitness) that are interval training, so this was the closest description i could find. are there any better descriptions i haven't found?
i started with "vigorous effort" because, well it was. but now almost 2 weeks in, it is easier. i'm still sweating away, just not sure if my effort/calories burned should change.
is there any rule of thumb for this?
