A nutritionist at the gym was telling my boyfriend that it's a good idea to have protein (like a muscle milk protein shake) after a work out to replenish your muscles. Is this true? THe vanilla muscle milk protein shake is high in calories so I only use one scoop. Is that even at all beneficial? I'm hearing you shouldn't have too much protein unless you're really trying to bulk up (which i'm not). Need some clarifications...

I love muscle milk! Not that this helps you any sorry! I get muscle milk light though. Vanilla creme and when I did use protein powders I did one scoop.

I am curious to see where this topic goes though because I try to get all my protein from foods.

Personally, I try to satisfy my nutritional needs through food.

For me, taking supplements/pills/potions etc is a failure of diet, unless there's a prescribed medical reason to do so.

I was told by my trainer friend, the more protein you consume along with weight training helps burn more fat, and builds muscle.. I also drink the muscle milk sugar free 100 calorie chocolate shake after my workout , i dont know if that helps im just going by what my friend said.

Protein shakes offer a broken down protein that doesn't really need to be digested, just absorbed. It gets delivered to muscles quickly to help them recover and repair themselves. They are good to have after a strength training workout but aren't necessary after cardio.

Since you are supposed to be eating your exercise calories having a protein shake after working out is just fine. I have one every day. I use Bluebonnet soy protein powder (they have chocolate and vanilla flavors) because it's the only one I've found that doesn't use artificial sweeteners and still tastes great.
  • oh no...my intention for taking protein shakes is not at all to replace a meal. I don't take diet pills, or believe in magic potions to lose weight. I eat right and work out and I am trying to lose weight the right way. I was just curious because this person worked at the gym and was giving us advice so I wanted to know if it was good advice. Mind it my workouts are sometimes pretty intense (i usually double up of 1 hr of yoga then 1 hr of zumba, and some days i'm running 4 miles in 25 minutes on the beach and doing 1 hr of zumba...so you can see why i'm concerned with replenishment of muscles...

    I agree.

I would recommend a good recovery drink actually. You need to replace the glycogen that was expended during the workout with a little bit of protein to begin muscle resynthesis. The optimal ratio would be 4 grams of carbs to 1 gram of protein. You can find products at Vitamin Shoppe that fit this, I really like the new P90X Results and Recover drink, or you could even make chocolate milk (although I find my recovery is much better with a product for it). The protein drink should be had later during the day.

jillian michael's has a protein shake and it's only 100 calories ---- my friends who train, say it's a must - especially after a big workout and has to be within 35 minutes or the body doesn't use it the same.
