I'm new to the site, and I'm just really confused about net calories. Hopefully, you can see if I've got this right and if not, please help! I swear, I'm half-way through a M.Ed. and this stuff confuses me... ;)

Goal calories are the amount of calories you should (or are allowed?) to eat per day?
Food calories are what you have eaten?
Exercise calories are the calories you've burned or taken away from food calories?
Net calories is the REAL amount of calories you've taken in at the end of the day after food and exercise calories have been entered?

So, is it good to be under your goal calories? I'm not sure what this means!

    Yes, you have it correct.

Net = cals eaten - (BMR + daily activity + exercise)

You want your Net to be as close to your daily goal as possible; say within 100 under or over. That maintains the deficit MFP calculates to allow for your loss/week goal (1 lb, 2 lbs, etc)
  • thank you so much!! :)
