As far as I know, all leafy greens are very high in folic acid as well as sunflower seeds and beans. Good luck.:flowerforyou:0

Dark leafy greens (not iceberg lettuce...choose romaine, spinach, and broccoli instead) will provide folic acid. If your cholesterol is chronically high, your doctor may prescribe you a medication to either reduce cholesterol production or absorption. It's important to find out your LDL and HDL levels; if HDL is very high, your doctor probably won't be as concerned as they will if your LDL is high, but it's still best to keep your cholesterol levels below 200. In the meantime, you should increase your fiber consumption, eat NO trans fats as they increase LDL cholesterol levels, and reduce your cholesterol consumption by eating fewer egg yolks and red meat. If you're currently insulin resistant, you should remove simple sugars from your diet (cakes, cookies, bleached flour, candy) and stick with whole grains, low GI-foods, and once again, fiber. Any time you eat a carbohydrate, you should combine it with a protein and a fat to reduce blood sugar spikes. You would also benefit from a diet moderate/low in carbohydrates rather than the 50% MFP chooses as a default. It's extremely important to keep your blood sugar in check in order to improve your insulin sensitivity. Exercise will also increase your insulin response. You might want to check out the South Beach Diet, as it promotes a diet lower in total carbohydrates and higher in healthy fats and protein.0

Try these websites. Diabetes.org has recipes. americanheart.org has recipes. clicon "Healthy Lifestyle" and then click on recipes. realage.com and lifestyle.com are two more great sites. You might also check recipezaar.com. They have great filters that will allow you to choose recipes based on your particular needs. Good luck.0

Pamy,
Hey! I am a RN Certified Diabetes Educator. The www.diabetes.org and american association websites are great; DARK and COLORFUL veggies are great additions to your diet for folic acid as is oatmeal (slow cook or steel cut are best), whole grains, and EXERCISE for cholesterol. I would recommend a daily vitamin geared towards your age group.
Get rid of simple sugars, juices, soda's (non-diet).
Ask your MD for a RD consultation....if you've got these diagnosis in your file, you can typically get insurance reimbursement. Argue that it is cheaper for them to pay for preventative healthcare than all that might come in the long term of the lack of education.
good luck and let me know if you need anything else.0 -
Hey Pam!
Sounds like wakwifey has you on the right track! I think one thing that is surprising to diabetics is that they need to watch their carbs (like wifey said, simple sugars, but overall, all of your carbs.) I agree that you should consult a registered dietician. He/she could help answer these questions and advise you and how many carbs would be good for you per day.
On a side note, you're working on your issues....so you might feel like "so much is wrong," but you're working on it and you should feel good about that. You know that all of us at MFP want you to succeed. Afterall, with such a great name, how could you fail???????:flowerforyou:0
