Hi all. I am overweight and it's late here right now. I"m looking to lose some weight, primarily by exercising. I haven't exercised in a while, and am looking for tips to start out so I don't burn out.

I have a daughter aged two, and she is getting very active. I have been housebound trying to tidy my house up, but I haven't been able to make any progress there either.

I started on my Wii fit, but then my TV broke and I haven't been on it since I replaced it.

Any tips for starting out would be really, really appreciated. Thanks.

You came to the right place!
I was also looking to lose some weight - but mostly to get my energy back! And as I changed my eating habits (you kind of have to if you will want to exist on 1200kcal diet) and I started some power walking early in the morning before work (with my baby)
It's been around 4 months and I am 9kg down, 4 more to go! And I don't feel as exausted anymore.
And I have been able to make changes in other area of my life!

Do you live in a place with nice sidewalks? If so, put the little one in a stroller and take her for a walk with you. I don't have kids but my neighbor and I walk together sometimes and her little girl loves getting to go with us. She loves looking at the trees and watching he dogs go by when people are out walking their dogs. Walking is a great way to start out because it's unlikely you'll hurt yourself walking and it's cheap! Just put on some shoes and go. :)

Best of luck to you. :) You can do it!

I agree with the walking. I used to walk everywhere, and as soon as I stopped walking to work, shops, etc I noticed I put on a few kilos. So i definitely recommend going for daily walks, the time does fly by if you just listen to your ipod and go!

I don't know much about kids, but i used to walk with my friend, and her daughter (9yr old) used to ride her bike with us as we started walking faster than her... hope that helps and good luck :)

Thanks so much. Do you usually get up and go to bed at a set time? What's the best time to go walking with the little one, before or after breakfast?

I went for a 15 minute walk the other day because I found a park. So it was fifteen minutes there and back. I had set my mobile phone to beep at 30 minutes, but DD couldn't resist. It was about dusk, so we both got bitten by midgies, mozzies and sandflies. This week I've been helping my Mum move in to my place after her break up with her partner. She's moving in on Tuesday, but I have been moving her and my friends stuff all week. I just get tired and my back is really sore too. This weight gain is getting ridiculous and I have so much to do in the home / Uni / divorce :( etc., that I feel overwhelmed and hadn't known where to start.

Should I exercise every day, or just for short bursts every day, or longer every other day? I'm not sure how to start at all.

I think the walking is a good idea for starters and you can work your way up from there. Also, you could put on some music and dance around the house with your daughter, you'll both have fun and you'll burn some calories too.
  • As far as when to go walking, I used to walk my son in a stroller when he was tired but too fussy to sleep. The vibration of the rolling along would put him right out. I can't imagine there's a *bad* time to go walking - do it when it fits your life.

    Good luck!
  • Also, all this stuff you're doing that's physical is also exercise. If you move boxes for three hours, don't get down on yourself if you don't walk that day!
