Back in June I was told that I am Prediabetic. I have to say it was a bit scary to hear those words as my Grandma(Mom's Mom)died at the age of 58 due to diabetes. I know with diet and exercise I can lose the weight I have allowed to creep on my body and get to a healthy BMI. I have already lost 9 lbs. in the 25 days I have been on MFP after realizing that I wasn't eating the calories I was burning through exercise. I still need to lose about 20-25lbs. to get to my healthy BMI goal . My blood levels are about 130 in the morning when I do my blood test(have been slacking at this for the last few months) and after exercise I noticed it goes down to about 90-93. I know diet plays a big part and sugar intake......this is where I get confused. Should I eat carbs or not? Should I eat fruit or not? I have read that apples and bananas are horrible for diabetics unless you have low blood sugar. I have to say I am NOT a huge fan of sweets, bread and pasta. I LOVE vegetables!!! My diary is public if you want to check out my carbs etc.....and give me any helpful suggestions if possible. Just don't rag on me for my occasional red beers  . I know there are lots of opinions out there on the carb subject so any help will be appreciated. PS I have my my diary to track sodium because I am a huge salt junkie, and fiber because I heard thats important as well but I noticed I don't keep track of my sugar eeeks. Will have to take off fiber.

Wow when I went and changed my fiber tab to sugar I realize I am constantly over on sugar daily. My coffee creamer habit is a huge part of this. I AM SO CLUELESS to this diabetes stuff I tell ya.

I had a look at your food diary & on the whole it dosn't look bad at all. You could add more green veg and wholegrain foods instead of cereal bars. You have already identified your biggest sugar sin..the creamer, substitute skim milk & you will be better off..also try & avoid desserts like the Yoplait whips, much better getting your sugar from fresh fruit.

Diabetes scares me as well, my mom is a type 2 diabetic and has struggled with it over the past few years. Much to my dismay when I started a weight loss program with a local hospital they drew blood and I found out 9 days ago that I was a diabetic with a fasting glucose level of 225. I broke the news to my parents friday when I stopped by and my mom wanted to check my glucose level to see if losing the 18 lbs have helped. She took the test and my glucose level dropped to 126 and that was taken about two hours after I ate some grapes. I am still on the high side of normal, but the proofs in the pudding, losing the weight will help you control your levels. I feel a lot better now than I did before, the first blood test was a nice kick in the butt.

I switched from eating white bread, flour, rice etc. to eating only whole wheat, sugar free bread, whole wheat flour, and brown rice. I think that has helped me a lot. My blood sugar is usually under 90 in the mornings.

I'm insulin resistant and it's more of a hereditary factor than my diet.
My carbs are all whole complex carbs - veggies, veggies and more veggies. I don't eat white or beige (so no bread, pasta, grains of any kind). When I saw my endocrinologist July, he said my numbers were in far better range. I am taking an Rx of Glumetza, so obviously that helps.
I watch my fruit - berries are best

You should google low Gi foods and follow those guidelines.

Tips from someone that has reveresed Type 2 Diabetes back to Normal.............

I have went from an A1C of 8.9 down to 4.6 in the last 3 years.

Most of your carbs should come from vegetables. Fill your plate with veggies. The more raw veggies, the better!!

Apples are good for you as well as peaches, plums, all types of berries and melons.

Potatoes and sweet potatoes are good for you, especially baked.

Severly limit grains. Eat no more than 1-3 times per week. You can get all the nutrients your body need from veggies and some fruits.

Fat and protein are your friend in stabilizing blood sugar and keepng it stable.

Outside of the food you eat, you have to feed your primary foods, this includes getting proper rest and getting enough exercise.

You can have fasting blood sugars in the 90's in the morning following some or all of these tips with in just a few days.

I am now a Certified Holistic Nutrition Coach and I am working with mostly Diabetics in my area. Give the body a chance, it will heal itself.

Diabetes is caused from chronic inflammation in the body. Please PM me if you would like to talk more.

PS I love my coffee and have cut back a lot on this journey from over a pot a day to about 4-5 cups(I have a big coffee cup). I am not fond of artificial sweetners but I do like stevia. Does anyone have an opinion on using this when you are prediabetic? I am sure I just sound like an idiot as it has to be better than the coffee creamer crap I use.

stevia is better than the cdreamer..it is plant based..but it still is sugar so use sparingly.

Ask your Doctor to send you to a diabetes class. I was sooo confused when I was told also. The class made the difference. You need carbs every meal to regulate your blood suger so it dosen't rollarcoast up & down. They will tell you how many carbs per day to have. At 145 I could have 10-11 carb choices. A carb choice is 15g of carb. You do need apples etc. just count carbs in each fruit. I also wanted to lose more weight so thats why carb choices were lower.

The diabetic classes are ways to keep your carb limits high to keep you on medications.............

To live medication free here is a great article that outlines what we should do!!

I am not a huge fan of carbs.....I "collect" a few here and there by things I eat but I really don't like bread and pasta. I do want to ask you something about the diabetes classes...... is your blood sugar "normal" now?

Ok after reading this and that today I have decided that I am changing my diary back to the way I had it(not tracking my sugar). Seeing it in the red causes me dread lol. Then I am going to continue the way I have been......Which means I am going to make healthier food choices and continue to exercise. I have to admit that exercising daily to me means 2 things......More calories I get to consume and more energy. Thats a win win in my book. I do want to thank everyone for their tips. Seeing is believing to me and I have to admit I don't believe in all the ADA "guidelines". I FEEL a lot of people that follow them are still in the same boat they just aren't paddling as fast as they were before. I do stress the words I feel in that last sentence!
