It all depends on whether you're taking medication for this condition. I've read in a number of medical journals that many medications used to treat depression and anxiety (worries) often contribute significantly to weight gain and apparently this is a negative side effect known to doctors. If this is the case for you then I would suggest you talk to your doctor about what your concerns are.

Exercise will help with the weight and with the depression. Physical activity does help - it is one of the few things that most doctors tell those suffering from depression to do that really works.

I know that for me, depression adds weight because I eat Chocolate and junk when I am depressed. I found for me that while I take meds for dep., I have now gotten real good at recognizing when it is coming and I work to take charge of the depression before it takes charge of me- I have actually said out loud- I'm getting depressed so- ... and I do something that I like to try and pull myself out of if before the junk food junkies get ahold- sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't:flowerforyou:

A lot of depressed people gain weight. I don't think it's the medicine. Many of us tend to "self-medicate" with food when we are stressed and depressed. Also, most people who are depressed tend to be very inactive and sleep a lot. I've been there, and it was a struggle just getting off the couch. Between the increase in calories and the decrease in exercise you gain weight.

I agree with rheston, exercise helps. Exercise will increase your seratonin levels (which is essentially what all of the pills do anyway) and help you loose weight.

    Take care of yourself.

Just depression alone will not make you gain weight, but the habits you pick up on while being depressed certainly will. Some antidepressants will definitley cause weight gain. Also from my experience, depression sucks away at any energy you may have, so you may not be to active during this time (I know I laid around alot, sat on my butt, watched alot of tv you get the point), also you may tend to overeat. That's pretty much all I did, and I gained alot of weight, just from those three factors. I will give you some hope though, it does get better. Surround yourself with people who care, see a doctor, start a journal, excercise, these things have really helped me! If you need anything let me know, I am after all a surviving queen of depression!!:flowerforyou:

I know when I struggled with depression I gained a lot of weight. It was because I didn't have any desire to get out and be active anymore. All I wanted to do was lay around and stuff my face full of food. :ohwell:
