    Ty,

My wife and I have been seriously considering a dog for our six year old. She is too rough w/our 24lb mutt and would like a bigger dog for her. What can U tell me about the breed. I hear they R great w/kids.

My husband and I have a black lab. She is soo amazing with our 15 month old. She is an older lab almost 8 years, so she isn't quite as energetic, but still loves a good game of fetch! I love bigger dogs, but definitely love my lab!

I only had her for about a year, but she was a great dog. Hardly ever left my side. From what I can tell (mind you i'm no dog expert) a boxer would be a great family dog. They are very loyal and affectionate. I will say that they prefer to be outside. I dont think it would be a good choice if you are looking for an inside dog. Jade always needed to be able to run around and get exercise. If not she would start the chewing/digging thing. She was GREAT with kids. Sometimes she would get a little cautious around strangers, but I dont think that is such a bad thing to have. She also did not like bigger dogs. The little ones she didn't mind, but other larger dogs she tended to feel a little more threatened by. Very smart breed I might add, but sometimes can be a little ...headstrong?..maybe stubborn is a better word. Still, next time i get a dog it will definitely be a boxer again! Many people think boxers are mean, but that is just because people train them to be. They are actually very loving animals.

    *aww, i miss her!*

Thanks the outdoor thing might B a problem :grumble: As far as hard headed I feel my current dog excells at it. Part Basenji/part Beagle it would be hard to ever find one like her again. Great alarm clock dog. Every morning at six she starts attacking our feet thinking they R chew toys. The old girl (14) still thinks she is a pup.

I love Boxers. They really are in my top two, next to Golden Retrievers.

What happened to her, Ty? If you don't mind me asking.

When my ex wife and I split, I moved out. Couldn't take the dog with me at the time and now I dont have the heart to take her away from a happy home (although I have no idea how anything could be happy in the same house as my ex  ) She was actually my dog, but I haven't had her in almost a year...so...

I had a box/pit mix and he was THE COOLEST dog ever. He was very good with my kids and very protective. When we told him to go get in his chair, he would go to the rocking chair and rock until he fell asleep. When it was bath time, he would go and stand in the tub until we came in there and gave him his bath. All those dogs with mean reputations just got that way because of the way they are raised. Boxers are great. I highly recommend one!!!

    Memaw

My boxer/pit looked like that picture too but less white and golden eyes.

You can't really replace a dog ....some people think of them as their children persay.Maybe go to the humane society or to the dog shelter in your area and adopt a dog. They have awesome animals and some have been treated so badly it is horrible .They need a guy like you seeing how much you cared for your other one.

My kids and I read about a little kitten in our newspaper that had its leg shot off and they needed donations to help it have surgery ...so my kids took money out of their own piggy bank and we went down there to the shelter and my kids got to see the kitten and every now and then we get pictures of how the kitten is doing now that it had surgery. I was such a proud parent!!!
