Is the sugar content in non-fat fruit yogurt considered to be refined or natural? I usually have one 6oz yogurt a day.

More than likely it is a refined sugar. The only "natural" sugars are those found in whole foods like fruit. If you read the label on the yogurt it will probably list some form of refined sugar, the most likely one is HFCS.
Now, with that being said...a six ounce yogurt with some refined sugar won't hurt you. Yogurt also has protien and having the protien will keep your blood sugar from spiking. There are some people who will recommend that you have absolutely no refined sugar or flour but I find it nearly impossible to do so and work a full time job and keep up with my life. I've taken an "everything in moderation" approach.

I don't think it really matters. All sugar goes into your body as glucose. High fructose corn syrup is the same thing as regular sugar.0

hmmm, good question. I don't eat yogurt, but could you tell from the list of ingredients maybe? Is there any words ending in "ose" which would be a sugar. Otherwise, I would imagine it comes from the fruit in the yogurt?0

I eat yogurt too, and always try to pick out the "no sugar added" or sugar frees. However, yeah, I believe there are refined sugars in there if it lists high fructose corn syrup or fructose, and mostly those are in the yogurts along with aspartame.0

I'm working on my meal plans for the week and was looking back on my diary on the days that I was over on my sugar and trying to figure out if it's coming from natural sugars or refined. I didn't know where to place my yogurt.
However one of the ingredients is crystalline fructose, so I guess that does mean it is refined..............so, if one of the ingredients ends in -ose, that means it's processed? Is that how you tell?
Thanks for everyones help!!!:flowerforyou:0 -
Most likely it is a combination of both refined and natural sugars. Milk, which is what yogurt is made from has nautral sugars in it, "fake" sugars should be avoided as it is just chemicals in the body. Either way sugars will turn into fat in the body unless they are utilized as energy. For example a great pre-workout snack would be 1/2- 1 Cup of Fage nonfat Greek yogurt and 1/2 Cup of fresh blueberries. It is loaded with protein and healthy carbs to sustain a workout, Fage nonfat Greek yogurt has the lowest in sugars of any other yogurt and is not loaded with chemicals. Most foods that are non-fat or low-fat will most likely have more sugars in them than their full fat counterparts as they need to replace that flavor (from the fat) by adding in sugar, otherwise it would taste like crap, lol. It is really best for our bodies to use whole natural real foods and little to none processed foods, most yogurts with fruit are processed as are the flavored and low fat and nonfat. We need to fuel our bodies with the right nutrients and calories in order to keep our engines running properly, just like your car.0
