Too Low of a Weight Goal?!

Hello all,

I was wondering what you guys would consider to be too low of a weight goal. I am concerned about some friends of mine, both on and off MFP, and their weight goals. Besides voicing my concern, I'm not really sure what else to do. What's worse is that these friends are losing the weight and their other friends are congratulating them!

I am 5'7'' and my goal is to be 130. I don't believe that to be unreasonable. When I was in high school I was probably 5'6'' and only weighed 110!! Looking back, I looked disgustingly skinny! I didn't have an eating disorder or anything, just a super fast metabolism and I couldn't gain weight for the life of me!

I just don't know what to do with people who are encouraging others to meet their weight goals when those weight goals are not healthy!

Thoughts??

As long as you are not muscular in the bulky sense, you should use the BMI as your guide.

You will probably hear many people say "ask your Dr." when it comes to age, heigth, body frame, gender, and so forth. Many tend to forget that most of us will need different weight goals as those in high school (depending on when you were last in high school). I graduated over 13 years ago and have two kids, I am the same heigth but weighed at my smallest 98 pounds, too thin. My best weight was 105 to 115 for I had curves and didnt look like a skeleton. Today there is no way that is a good weight for me, maybe the 115 but realistically I cannot see 105 without being starved looking. But yes, a doctor would be the best to ask, just be resonable. Good luck! :)

i agree with both of you! i'm not concerned about my own weight goals, i was just using myself as an example.

my question was beyond voicing my concern for those who i believe weight goals are too low and suggesting they ask a doctor for their ideal weight goal, what can i do? and what do i do about others encouraging this potential unhealthy weight goal??

I have a friend on here, we are the same height. But right now she is where I WANT to be. I'm 5'10" and want to be 160. Without naming names (and if you read this SORRY) 160 looks chubby on her ... where as 160 looks healthy on me. Anything under that I look sick!
All that to say ... it's up to YOU. For your height, that weight is a good goal. As for what to tell people you think have a too small weight goal ... You need to think of body frames. My friend has a larger build than I, so her weight goal looks healthier on her. It really should be decided by a doctor, BUT ...

^^^ you make a good point. body frame is a factor. but even considering frame, doesn't 95 lbs at 5'3'' seem WAY too low?? (sorry if that is anyone's goal, just an example)

the weight i gained, i gained in my hips and thighs, so when i tell people i want to lose weight, they tell me i'm nuts and i look great. yeah, i look great bc i squeezed on these skinny jeans! haha. if another 5'7'' woman who gained the 20 lbs i gained in, say, her stomach, it would be much noticeable. so i get what you're saying!
  • to be honest... how do you figure one is an unhealthy weight? body fat % matters more than the scale number... as long as someone is eating every 3 hours 5-6 small meals a day and consuming their good carbs, fats, and protein it is no cause for concern.

95lbs at 5ft 3" is just way to low, cant believe thats under 7stone, I would say around 120lbs is more realistic. Also they are more likely to stay at 120 when they get there, rather than yoyo'ing up and down as cant see them being able to maintain 95lbs:noway:

I'm 5'2" and according to BMI, my weight should be between 101.2 - 136.7 lbs, to be healthy. Anything under that would be unhealthy. 95lbs would be unhealthy for someone taller than me.

Although I would prefer being underweight than overweight, being underweight shouldn't be anyone's goal. Many girls have body image problems and want to be excessively skinny, they see other skinny girls and want to be skinnier to look supposedly hotter, when in reality not even men like unhealthily skinny women.

When it comes to weight, so many people, especially females, are believing thinner is better. If image is everything, skin and bones with no curves is not a great image either and can be more unhealthy than one being overweight. I was 98 pounds (4"11 in heigth) and too thin, my hubby preferred more curves. I would just let those aware of the dangers of low weight and that it truly is not attractive either (if image is what they are going for).

I don't know that the number really matters as much as tone and general health... My sister is a marathon runner. She is 5'7" and weighs about 115-120lbs, and wears a size 2. Is she skinny? Heck yeah. Is she unhealthy? Nope. I'm sure some folks probably look at "5'7", 115-120lbs" and assume she's some willowly little model type, but she's all muscle and probably the healthiest person I know.
