What is the difference and which is a better indicator?
When I use the BMI calculator here or on other sites it gives me 24.7%. I use a Tanita scale which is supposed to be highly accurate and I get a reading of 20.5%.
Can someone give me some insight into this? Thanks!

Neither.
Get professionally tested.
It costs about $75, but it's very worth it.
I had my body comp hydrostatically tested in November and now I know exactly how many calories I burn per minute for various exercises. No more guessing or "estimating". I also know exactly how many calories I need to eat (to the calorie) for maintenance/weight loss/weight gain, etc.
My body fat % scale has me somewhere around 29%. The comp test had me at 21%. BIG difference.0
