Great for skin and hair. If your body is made up of 70% of water, but you're not taking in enough and sweating a bunch out, then I'm guessing it may run a little more sluggish and not give you your optimal performance. Also, I've also heard that alot of times we eat when our body is really telling us we're dehydrated.

All of the above! I drink a glass of water before I eat and I tend to not eat as much. And it is great for your skin. All in all I feel 10 times better when I drink water through out the day. :drinker:

 Drinking the water keeps you hydrated if you are excercing. Actually you should drink water only when you are thirsty and also when excercising to. The 8 glasses a day is a myth, drinking too much water can harm your kidneys!

I agree about the water. I use to drink a lot of sodas-mainly Mountain Dew. I started to drink water in place of Mountain Dew this week (this week 1/2 soda - yahoo!)--anyways, drinking water makes you feel fuller and it helps clean out your system. I feel a lot better getting off the sodas and drinking at least 8 cups of water a day.

    Drinking water does the following:
-Keeps you hydrated. You're 70% water, and some body parts contain as much as 95% water. You need it to live. It also makes sure all your body processes are running smoothly.

-Helps you lose weight (the definition of calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by one degree celsius, so if you drink ice water your body burns calories when it heats it to body temp - also note that its calorie with a little c, not Calorie, the one we count for weight loss. The big 'c' is actually a kilocalorie, or 1000 little calories). Check out this article: http://health.howstuffworks.com/question447.htm

-Fills your belly up so you're hungry less. Your body doesn't really have a way of differentiating between hunger and thirst

how does it harm your kidneys, I have only found one thing saying you didnt need to 8 glasses or 1/2 your body weight of water. What did you find?

That seems a bit off to me too... both your bladder and kidneys function in cycles, which literally have to do with water filtering through them. The more water, the cleaner your body tends to be (hence the idea of flushing your system with water). For water to damage your body you have to drink a TON in a very short period of time with no salt intake... along the lines of drinking 3-4 gallons of water in under an hour in high heat - like the Tour d'France or in a big Marathon.
  • I know it helps to keep your body temperature regulated, helps cleanse toxins out of your body and helps keep your digestive track moving! Water also helps to keep the largest organ of your body looking fabulous---your skin! You'd be amazed at how many things are processed through your skin! And when you sweat, salts come out of your skin as well as toxins, and they can only escape your body if you drink enough water! So, bottoms up!!:drinker:

I've heard that drinking water helps maintain the elasticity of your skin - so when you lose a substantial amount of weight it helps your skin 'resize' naturally

I agree...water does not hurt your kidneys...it does help them flush out the waste and keep your body clean and healthy.

the water doesnt actually "harm" your kidneys persay, but an excess of water in a short time can leave you too hydrated, and without enough electrolytes. Say you were constantly drinking only water, but not allowing yourself to go to the bathroom or eat food. Your body's electrolyte level could drop dramatically which can result in cardiac arrest, and even to death. If you are drinking enough water throughout the day, with meals and after workouts...etc, and eating pleanty of fruits and veggies (foods containing water) then you should be just fine. hope that helps.

Ahh ok, now I know what you mean. It is possible as I mentioned, it just requires a LOT of water in a very short time to reach that point. A few gallons in 2-3 hours, way more than most of us will consume throughout the day. People do die from water poisoning at major athletic events which is why many serve things like gatorade instead of plain water. I don't htink most of us have anything to worry about drinking a half gallon to a gallon a day. Also, if you're working out in the heat it may be necessary to drink even higher amounts of water. Just remember to have some salty foods if you sweat a lot :)
  • I had kidney stones twice and since the second time, I have been drinking a minimum of 8 glasses of water every day. Its been 2 years now, no kidney stones and I feel 10x better. I learned in one of my college classes that when you start to feel thirsty, your body has already started dehydration.

Thank you all for your help. I will get on the Water Wagon and I've already pulled down to one diet coke a day if that.

Also, do you all count your glasses of milk under calories? I love milk. I drink Fat Free milk. I like a cup a day but that would suck if I have to count the calories for that. What do you do?

I love skim milk too, but at 80 calories a cup, I definitely count the calories.

Drinking enough water also stops u from retaining water and being bloated and this affects your weight. If u dont drink enough water u will retain the litte u DO drink and that will make u bloated and increase ur weight.

After you get on the water wagon for a few days or weeks you will notice how easy it becomes to give up the rest, try substituing your sodas for green or white tea. i never thought I would see a day when i didnt drink about 1/2 litre of pepsi, but now I go days without even having a sip, I didnt plan it, the water and tea just took over. Plus there are sooo many cals in soda, and diet is really not good for you, who wants to waste calories on that??

wanted to add, the only thing I ever read against drinking 8 oz or more water per day was a guy who said, we only need water when we are thirsty, his defense was that the cavemen and indians didnt drink a gallon of water a day, they went to the stream and took a drink when they were thirsty. he also says that getting your bladder to full from water and then peeing will cause it to stretch and you will never feel as if you have peed completely. But personally, I have seen so many benefits in my own body since drinking water all day, and I know I dont hold pee in all day long and then try to go, sooo, I think I'll be fine
