Sodium

Anyone have any idea if sodium plays a major role in weight loss or not? I wasn't really watching my sodium until today and noticed that I was going over. I usually only drink water and try to eat as fresh as possible. I have been doing MFP for about a month and have lost only about 8 pounds. I exercise like crazy but still...it has me wondering. Actually I started doing this after a cholesterol scare and this made it easy to track the amount I was taking in- which wasn't much at all.

To much will cause you to store water so it will look like your weight loss is slowing, also docs recommend a low sodium diet for people with high blood pressure or heart problems.

It plays a big difference for me. I have lost more weight by watching my sodium. And I can gain a lot of water weight by going over in sodium
  • Thank you for the information! I think I will switch my settings to track sodium on my main screen now.

The sodium will always make you retain water therefore, not givin gyou accuracy on the scale; however more importantly is the role Sodium plays in your health. It can elevate blood pressure, and make your kidneys have to work harder than they need to. There are new guidelines now put out stating that Americans need to lower our sodium levels to something like 1500 mg of sodium (don't quote me on that). It really is just the healthy thing to do for overall optimal health.
