I everyone, SO i was wondering if anyone was going through the same thing as me. I'm a dorming college student and have a hard time figuring out what is ok to eat in the dining halls. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

... is there anyway you can get off campus to go food shopping. The dining hall was the death of me...
  • I am not sure where you are attending College but here at SMU, in Dallas (I work here ) the dinning staff would be more than happy to provide dietery information for what they prepare. We also have a very wide variety of foods prepared from vegie burgers and complete salad bar to icecream and pizza. I bet you can find the balance. Good luck

I know what that's like! I live in an apartment now, but college eating (and drinking, if you do that) is always a struggle. At my school, they post the nutritional content of every food item at the dining hall online. It wouldn't be a bad idea to ask someone who works there if they have it posted somewhere. What I used to do is check the menu before I went there to plan out what I would eat for a snack/meal/day. Some low-cal options are always the salad bar and soup! Good luck! :)

This is coming from a senior in college who put on at least twenty five pounds during the first two years I was at school. I ate at the cafeteria for those two years. My weight gain was mostly because I did not eat things in moderation and would select the wrong foods. Be careful with desserts and the soda because these things are in endless supply at the cafeteria, I ended up having this kind of food at least once or twice a day and often wouldn't limit myself. I also would eat a lot things that were greasy like pizza and fried foods and again moderation was a problem for me. Try hitting up the salad bar more often and selecting fruits. Also I ate a lot in a sitting because I knew I didn't want to trek to the cafeteria later to get a snack. So if your cafeteria lets you have take out boxes, I would suggest filling it with healthy snacks so that you don't feel pressured to eat until you are stuffed.
Mostly I think the other thing that also hurt me was that I stopped being active. In high school I was in the marching band and track so I had a fairly active lifestyle but at college I was not involved in sports. So try taking time out of your day to go to the gym. I know college makes everyone extremely busy, so get a planner and organize your schedule so that you do have time to go work out. Also, make it fun, take friends with you or join an club sport. Believe me, I wish I had done these things when I was a freshmen and sophomore.

Thanks I'm going to check online now if they have any nutriutional info. I have stopped drinking soda which I am hoping will help me out too. Thanks so much =]
  • I'm currently having the same problem. My caf has fruit that I usually take out for a later snack and I try to plan what I am going to eat before I go in. I steer completely away from whatever the specials are because I know they are no good for me. I stick to salad, sandwiches, soup. Its pretty easy to get bored of it really quickly (and my caf rarely serves plain anything - so its difficult to find something not ladened down in sauce) so I try to add in a special by extra exercising (or cutting down the calories in another meal).
