Protein shakes...

I know nothing about them but I am interested in learning. I have been coming in under in my calories for about a month now and I was losing pretty consistantly however I think I have hit a plateau and I am sure it is because I am not eating enough. I am thinking of ways to add in more caloires without too much more food as I don't feel hungry. I have read lots of people suggest protein shakes...please enlighten me!

    Protein shakes are just another source of protein. Are you coming under your daily protein requirements? The primary benefits to protein shakes are (a) convenient protein without fat or carbs (which are easy enough to get through eating regularly), (b) post-workout they are a good source of fast-digesting protein (e.g., whey). They can be expensive however as you are looking to pay about $1.50-3 per shake generally.

    If all you're looking for is a way to fill in the calories you could probably save a lot of money by just having a spoonful of peanut butter. :smile:
  • I think protein shakes are great. There are a couple you may want to look into. Whey is a fast-absorbing protein you would take during the day. I have a mid-morning snack everyday with one. Then before I go to bed I have a casein shake, its a slower absorbing protein your body "feeds" on while you sleep. There are tons of online places to get great deals. I just ordered a 5# tub of whey from NutraBio.com for under 48bucks with shipping. 80 servings at $48 is .60 per serving. Pretty cheap way to get some calories. Trueprotein is another site Ive seen recommended. I have not tried their's. Also stay away from Muscle Milks and other popular brands. Consumer Reports just slammed them for high ingredients of harmful metals or something in them. Do your research but protein shakes can be a great way to get some protein.
