Has anyone here tried black rice? I am reading that its a nutritional superstar and it seems to be prepred similarly to brown rice..I just wanna know from anyone who had made/tasted it whats the best way to prepare it??

  • I've mixed it with brown rice, and I like it very much. It's got a nice rich nutty flavor to it. I won't cook rice without it nowadays. Best of all, with so much flavor, you don't need much of it on your plate!!

Love it! I also really like red rice. The trick to preparing these with success . . . .

Soak the black rice for 20 minutes in cold water (red rice for 30 minutes), then rinse until the water runs clear. Use very cold water and mix with the rice in a pot with a very tight fitting lid. Bring to a boil and immediately turn right down to simmer (a 2 out of 10 - quite low). DO NOT lift the lid or stir. Allow to simmer for the alloted time then take off the heat and allow to sit for 5 minutes, again DO NOT lift the lid until the 5 minutes is up. Fluff with a fork and enjoy!

These have more texture and flavor than brown rice, I prefer them by far!

    Forbidden rice you mean?

When I cook it in the rice cooker it makes my house smell like popcorn which is kindof odd, but I like it lol. It also kindof makes a mess, and I constantly have to wipe the counters off. It seems to take a bit longer to cook and a bit more water but we love the flavor and its got a bit of a pop/crunch to it when you eat it.

There is a local sushi place here in town thats started using it and according to their info sheet, the forbidden rice has more antioxidants than blue berries and all sorts of other great stuff in it.

Thank you for the cooking detail. A woman in Trader Joes was telling me I should try it but I was too embarrassed to say I had no idea how to cook it. She overheard me complaining about having to cook Quinoa again and was try to make suggestions.

Oh man. I love black rice.

I used to cook black glutinous rice into a porridge. Add some coconut milk, agave, and chopped mango to make a really healthy dessert!

Wow! Thanks for asking this. I just saw some at Costco and was curious too. I think I'll go and buy a bag.
