Help - I injured myself while training... damn.

I've been running this last 5 weeks and have lost 9kg(20lbs) but.... <drama>

I just saw the doctors yesterday, and I have achilles tendonitis. Incredibly painful heel and can barely put any weight on it, so I'm on crutches. DAMN. Totally ruined my routine. I might be out for a few weeks.

Now I'm HUNGRY, because I got used to eating an extra 600 exercise calories a day.

Any ideas for any low/non-impact training I can do... ???
I can't bear weight on my left foot. Apparently walking on crutches burns cals, but because my weight, my hands hurt like crazy.

I'm not a big swimming fan, but trying not to drown burns calories, right???

<sigh> I miss my running...

When I hurt my knee during marathon training I started running in the pool...no impact....I did eventually swim laps too but it all started just doing laps of pool running....not going to burn the same cals but it is better than nothing. also if you can get on a stationary bike and see how that feels that might help too

Stationary bike, I have one at home and my dad who has arthritis uses it from time to time. It is pretty low impact.

Oh I feel your pain! I was in an accident about a year ago and know what you are going through. Not only can you not work out you tend to get depressed when you are in pain and can’t get the benefits of those endorphins you produced by exercising, especially running!! Are you going to a physical therapist? If so, those exercises, while they don't seem like much do help you get strong. Also check with your Dr. to see if you can do a rowing or cycling machine. Yoga helps as well.

Also go to your health food or GNC and pick up some Arnica pills and Ester C (naturally check these out with your Dr. first). These are naturtal nutrients that help you heal. Feel better! Don't fret. Just ghet healthy and pick up where you left off. The runing path will be waiting for you

When I got bad flare-ups from gout, I had to use crutches also, and at the time my size hurt my hands too. The one way I alleviated the pain was to use workout gloves, the kinds you use when you lift. It's just an option.

But as for the lower body, the stationary bike and swimming are pretty much non-impact activities you could do for cardio. Or a hand bike.
  • Oh that is painful. I was running the treadmill and did that for both heals. So now I ski all winter outdoors and it has never come back while skiing but I do feel it when I switch to shoes without good arch support. My injury lasted about a year but I could not keep completely off them which is what is recommended.

I was once crutches for 3 months and my upper body strenght was the best it has ever been but it took a several weeks before the pain of the newness to wear off so embrace the crutches.

You may have to switch to strenght training by lifting weights.
  • I once read I could actually burn MORE calories swimming than running, especially if I'm a novice swimmer? Any truth in this?

Running and even dog paddling in a pool sounds a like a great idea, wish there was a way to test how many calories I burn, but my HRM isn't waterproof.

There's a gym next to the pool so will do some weights as well - thanks for the tips!!!!

Thank you so much for the support!

That sucks. But, don't rush it. You will end up being out of commission longer. The pool is a good idea. A lot less convenient than running, but a good replacement for the short term.

    Good Luck!!!
