what does deficit mean?

I am still trying to figure out the whole nutrition thing... and I was hoping someone could tell me what it means when under goals it says "daily calorie deficit".... please help.... :blushing:

    Difference between how many calories it would take to maintain your present weight vs. how many calories you will be eating while attempting to lose weight (amount of calories chosen to eat daily while losing weight)
