Fruit, Veg and Salads

Hi All,
I've read in various posts around these forums about people who don't count there calories for fruit, veg and salad. I eat a lot of all three as I'm sure many people on here do. I also record everything that enters my mouth therefore the calories in these 3 food types add up, so does the sugar in the fruit which sends me over my target most days.
What do other people do?. I know I shouldn't deprive myself of these three food types as the health benefits outweigh the calories. If you eat all three types each day the calories soon build up in your diary.
Sorry if this topic has been covered elsewhere but I'm unsure weather to continue counting or just ignore the calories and not bother tracking them.
What's your thoughts...........

at the start i used to count all my fruit n veg that i ate but i dont bother now as i find it too hard to find everything in the system. plus fruit and veg is healthy so why track them?? thats what i think anyway0

I track everything, and haven't had trouble working vegetables and such into my calorie goal, since they're very low calorie.
I did go ahead and just turn off the sugar tracking, though. I try to avoid processed sugars and added sugars, but I don't want to see it giving me a little red mark when I've eaten fruit!0 -
i track them unless it's a very small amount. i don't track 1 slice of tomato, or 1 leaf of lettuce on my sandwich. if it's a significant amount like my salad for dinner, i will count that.0

Hi, I count everything...especially until I meet my goal. I'll probably continue to do so after meeting my goal too.0

I track all of my fruit and veggie's but I ignore the sugar, I'm usually over by lunch. I kind of figure if you aren't diabetic then those sugars don't really matter. And as far as calories if my veggies throw me over I don't mind too much. I like to see how much fiber, iron, and protein I have gotten to see if I'm falling short anywhere, I use mine as a goal more than a limit.0

I track both. You'll find the carbs add up in both fruits and veggies. Too much fruit can cause weight gain becauses in our bodies sugar is sugar (just the fruit sugar affects your bloodsugar a lot more slowly). The sugar in fruit is counted towards total carbs. I used to create my own food for fruit and minus out the sugar number but that got too tedious. When I have a big salad from the salad bar at my work I have to estimate the amount. I have a 1/2 cup measuring cup at my desk and I use that to eye it. I can do a 400 calorie salad easy. Of course it also includes chicken or fish, chickpeas or kidney beans, sometimes raisins and it's a huge salad.
If I can log it I do. My man still hasn't gotten used to remembering the kitchen scale when cooking a few items together like his cream of mushroom/red wine sauce (it's so yummy) so I can create the recipe. But I still try and log the best I can.
But I don't log everyday. My weekends are still and will always be a work in progress.0 -

Meghan's must think alike! Tracking what you are eating is important- if you aren't going to track fruits and veg, than you should probably go all out on WW as their system is designed for this. But if you try calorie counting but don't count all the cals- you really are just hurting yourself (and the accuracy of your diary) in the long run.
I too do not track my sugar intake because I don't feel that the sugar goals on here are realistic for anyone eating any fruit. But if it's a concern for you, you could just mentally subtract the sugar from fruit from your overall- if you are still within your goal withou the fruit than
It's all about cals in vs cals out- there are people who eat McDonalds or Twinkies, or nothing but packaged foods for X number of months- and lose because they stay calorie restrictive. A calorie, even from a healthy food, is still one your body needs to process and deal with no matter what.
Anywho that's my $.02 Good luck!0 -
A calorie is a calorie. If it goes in my mouth I put it in my food diary. I don't track my sugar, it's not as important to me as other things. I'm basically only conserned with not going over my calories, fat & sodium. I also like to track my fiber, I like to make sure I'm over on that. I don't think there is such a thing as eating too much fruit & veggies.0

You definitely want to track it all--will be so useful to go back and take a look when you have successful weight losses!0
