Heading to New England

Hey all! After Al asked about his trip to New York, I realized that you were a great resource for traveling.

I’m flying into Windsor Locks, Connecticut this Saturday and will be in the New England area for a week. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should see and where I should go?

I’m quite a history buff and have been to – and LOVED – Boston. I’m open to driving to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, whatever. Any advice would be appreciated! I’m already worried about eating out everyday, but I’m going to try my best to be good (I’m almost half way to goal and don’t want to blow it now). I’d rather sight-see than worry about calorie counting!

Tami, Zen and Jen are my go to Ct. ladies...lol I'm in Boston so if you love it so much come back and see me....:frown: I'm all alone here! *waving*....oh wait...banks is here :happy: you can still come!!!

I love Nh too in the summer I like to go to North Conway and Lincoln, and the twin mountains is good ....its really beautiful and relaxing....its great in the winter too for skiing.....

um...Oh miss Lauren is in NH...well I'm excited for you and have a great trip...if you have any questions about Boston or Mass (ahem Matt !) pm me anytime!! :flowerforyou:

If you like Rhode Island I would highly recommend Newport Rhode Island. It has so much to do shopping, beaches, touring the mansions, walking trails, ghost tours, A dinner train, A small casino, so much, Check it out.
As for CT we have the Mark twain house and a bunch of museums. We also have mystic seaport, essex train tours and alot of hiking trails.

Just joined tonight and saw this board. I'm in the heart of Beantown now. Live in the back bay. Go online www.bostonducktours.com They will be all booked if you wait. Lot's of history and a great ride in the city and on the water. Freedom trail (if you don't mind walking a lot) It will take you to the state house all the way to the North End (aka Little Italy). $$$$ shop on Newbury Street. Have lunch at Stefanies on Newbury Street and Coffee at Cafe Victoria in the North End on Hanover Street.....Have dinner in any of the fabulous restaurants in the South End. A new favorite is the Beehive (valet parking available, decent price and big portions)....Have a blast !!!! I love Boston !!!

Ack duck tours. LOL! Ahh, if you're a history buff, take a quick trip to Sturbridge Village
that's not far from the CT line. Pretty cool.

Ahh, lets see, I know the north shore, so that's where I know. There is a castle in Essex called
hammond castle, that's a really cool tour. http://www.hammondcastle.org/

Ahh, what else um, there's so much. Of course Boston has tons of stuff to see for a history person, I'm trying to think of the less obvious stuff. There is always Plymouth Plantation, I've been there like 100 times when I was in school. that was a standard field trip in elementry school.

You can visit Lexington green, not a ton there, but pretty cool to see where the revolution started. Oh and I always recommend visiting the constitution in Charlestown Navy Yard. http://www.ussconstitution.navy.mil/

LMBO plymouth plantation...omg tell me about it....I remember the boys in our clas torturing the actors trying to get them to come out of their roles...so funny...def. standard field trip here too :laugh:

I feel like I grew up in Sturbridge Village as a kid. My parents took us there every year. I have not been in a few years. Have to go and take pictures. Plymouth is nice also. My husband and I travel there just about every week-end.

I love Sturbridge Village! I was actually in a wedding there a few years ago at the old meeting house and the reception was at that nice restaurant place. Wayyy cool!

I LOVE Boston. Going to visit my Ali soon (maybe Banks too if he behaves! hehe)...Oh, but driving in Boston SUCKSSSS!!!!!! You dang Ma$$holes!!!!

In CT, there is always Mystic Seaport...which is a lot of fun this time of year. Someone else mentioned the Essex train, which I did last year. It was fun. You can also take a riverboat trip too. I live in Bridgeport, CT bordering Fairfield..you could come visit ME! :laugh: :laugh: (That's a sight to see for suree!!)

I haven't spent too much time in Rhode Island, but I have always wanted to check out Newport,

There's nothing exciting in maine though....some mountains...lol and some lobster places, ocean..yippee! lol Oh and a buncha tourist trap towns where you can spend all your money quite quickly :bigsmile:

Rhode Islander here.. Take a tour of Fenway!!! It's so much fun!! Celtics are playing at home tonight though so I bet it will be mobbed.. But I love Quincy Market ..great place to shop!! Have fun

I like Freeport, Maine...it's like one big outlet!! shooopppinnnggggg!!!!

Hey Hartford has the Mark Twain House and Harriet Beecher Stowe house. The Twain house is way cool! There are some nice museums in Hartford too- I remember going to see the Charter Oak Chairs when I was in elementary school. I am a South Windsor HS Graduate. Sturbridge was always my favorite place along withthe Boston Science Museum- I remember when the T-Rex was just a head and I added my pennies to build the body.

oh you know what else is fun to do near Boston...Salem is cool....you can visit the House of Seven Gables and the witch museum....tons of shops and sites....Salem Willows is a sort of carnival place near the waterfront...beach nearby...quaint and fun....visit it at Halloween and its a bit ah....wild LOL

I used to work in Windsor Locks,
theres an aeronautic museum at the airport there. Its decent.
There is the basketball hall of fame about a half hour north of there in Springfield MA, take I-91.
There are also a bunch of museums in Springfield in a place called the "Quadrangle"
There's a doctor seuss museum if you have kids.

Sturbridge village is up I-84 about 45 minutes and theres a lot of historic things there, a shaker village, etc.

I like Newport RI as well for the shops, but be careful, theres LOTS of tasty food and irish bars there.:devil:

Also, try the Westerly Beach of RI, only about an hour south of Windsor and about 10 minutes away from the Mystic Seaport in CT. (also more shops and irish bars) Mystic also has an awesome aquarium.
