Sara Lee 45 - 100% Whole Wheat Bread - is it really?

This is the bread that I buy for my family, but I sometimes wonder if it's just too good to be true. The first ingredient is whole wheat flour - that means it's the good stuff, right? Please say it's true because it's the only whole wheat bread my kids (and hubby) will eat. I like it because 2 slices are only 90 calories - although I've bought some packages that were sliced thicker, so I'm sure they were more calories... One of these days I need to buy a new food scale - one with grams on it.
Anyway - is this bread a good choice for getting whole grains? I always make sure it says "whole" in it -but this bread's taste and texture is just so similar to non-"whole" wheat bread, that I sometimes have to wonder...

Hi There....
What you are looking for is the term "whole-grain"....Whole Wheat still has much of the 'germ' removed, this is where you get the good fibre ect... Whole Grain means that the entire grain has been used when milling the flour. Here is an excellent link to explain...it is the Canadian Government Health site but it is the same in the states

UGH - I thought "Whole Wheat" and "Whole Grain" both meant it was using the 'whole' grain, rather than processing it down. And that "wheat" and "multi-grain" didn't mean it was "whole" but if it said "whole" then it was the good stuff. This stinks. Does anyone know if this is the same in the U.S. as with the Canadian site? Or if it's sold in the U.S., does "whole" mean the whole grain?0 -
Oh wait - I was just looking at the package again and it says "Good Source of Whole Grain." Does that mean anything? And on the side, under Nutritional Spotlight, it says all the calories, fat, sodium, sugars and figer and then the last bubble says "Whole Grain - 8g" (for 1 slice). At the bottom of the ingredients list it says "This product provides 8g of whole grain in a 1 slice serving. USDA recommentds consuming 48g of whole grain every day."
Can someone who has a whole grain bread tell me if your package says anything like this - and how many grams of whole grain it has?
I know - maybe I'm stretching, but I really like this bread, so I'm hoping it's for real LOL! I'm going to be so disapointed. I've been afraid to ask, but I guess it's better to know for sure, right?0 -
This link should be helpful to you:

The package of the bread we use (Natura by Bimbo) has a little seal from the Whole Grains Council and an explanation on the back that says that in order to have that seal, bread must contain at least 16g of whole grain per portion and 100% whole wheat flour. This bread has 70 cal and 16g of whole grain per slice.
Your bread complies with the Whole Grains Council standard, as a portion is considered to be 2 slices, and you have 16g of whole grain in 2 slices of your bread.0 -
I use the same bread and it is whole grain sweetie.0
