Sugar vs Sugar Alcohol

Ok, I tried looking this up under a google search, and got rather confused with the medical jargon answers that I found. I am trying to cut out "sugar" as much as I can from my diet. I have converted over to Splenda for my coffee or tea, and try to avoid all items that have "sugar" in the ingredients. I eat natural sugars (from fruit and vegetables), but try to cut out all the rest. On rare occasion, when I don't have time to eat breakfast, I'll grab a protien bar which has 3g of sugar and 11g of sugar alcohol. So my question is, is this just as bad as eating something with 14g of sugar in it?Are sugar alcohols just as bad as plain sugar? I find it very frustrating that "healthy foods always seem to have high levels of sugar in them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Sugar Alcohol is NOT sugar. From my understanding (I was in the dark about this for a while too) sugar alcohols do not impact your blood sugar levels (thats why they are great for most diabetics) and are very low calorie. They count as carbs for a reason I dont truly understand but I look at it as neutral carb since it's found in most low-carb foods (protein bars and etc) and do not account for net carb intake.
Down side? Tummy discomfort, bloating and if too much sugar alcohol is taken in....you get a laxative effect.
Bottom line, don't count them as sugar nor as carbs. They have no glycemic impact.0
