What are your thoughts on a stationary bike. Do they work well and worth my money?

I had one at one time. It was a recumbent. Eventually it started to hurt my knees - I don't know if I was sitting in it wrong or what, but I haven't liked the seated bikes since (except the one I'm riding on the beach pictured left). We paid $600, many years ago for a nice one. I find that whatever gym equipment you get, buy the best you can afford. The top-of-the-line stuff keeps it's value better. We absolutely love our treadmill.

With all of that said, at one time we considered a elliptical. Used, a good one goes for $3000, I figured it would be cheaper to join a gym for 8 years.

they do burn a lot of calories, if you are paying attention. i take spin class and it burns a ton of calories. when i am by myself just watching tv, not so much. i guess it depends on how much you like riding. i personally stare at the clock for the entirety of spin class because i don't like biking that much.

i use cycling as part of my cardio ... but i have to put music on or it drives me barmy with boredom
so i vary my routine between that and tony littles gazelle and weight trainng machine and an abtrainer
and then i go swimming x3 a week

i also use things like gardening as part of my exericise as i burn alot of calories cuttin my lawn because it takes 90 mins
my grass has never been so well kept ... but it feels good because something good comes out of it plus exercise
