malnutrition does not equal healthy weight loss

the worst part about bingeing on cashews is that whenever I have done it i felt like i ate a stick of butter after. THE WORST.0

as for nutrition... I still have some unhealthy habits. I am in a work/lifestyle position where I go out for meals a lot. I party and drink booze. there is always room for improvement. This is why I am here. one should ALWAYS think about ways to improve. and I have 5 kilos of improvement to do.
variety is key. I made a vow to try one completely new veggie every week. This is how i got hooked on kohlrabi. It's kind of the best.
If you just eat carrots and celery all the time, i guarantee that in a week you will be ready to eat a block of cheese. in one sitting.
so switch it up. try and eat the whole rainbow. Don't avoid things (except maybe for deep friend things, and made only of sugar things) but eat small portions of everything. most people really screw up with portion control.0 -
Its not an excuse to say I absolutly can not spend the 400 to 500 a month on grocerys if I bought nothing but fresh.I have kids to feed and if I want them to be able to eat all month I cant spend like that.So its canned vegtables and I try to do the best i can.fruit is bought fresh only because canned fruit is to yucky to work around.I also eat rice cakes but not because they are low calorie but I actually think they are yummy. My heart is good,my cholesterol blood pressure all that is excellent.Im amazingly healthy for someone that did drugs for almost 20 years and is overweight0

really? you find that buying canned things is cheaper than fresh?
re with kids, I can't relate but i can imagine. you go for things that are more convenient. But remember that you are creating eating habits of your children as well.0 -
I find it interesting when companies will market their foods as "healthy" because they are low fat, or low calorie. Twizzlers may be fat free, but they are still empty calories. Same thing with most hundred calorie packs. They are only one hundred calories, but they aren't healthy calories.0
-
canned is Way cheaper.Im a stay at home mom so conviance is not an issue for me I have time. The one time I bought all fresh fruits and veggies my grocery bill was $286.00 that was way to much and was only for 2 weeks worth of food.0
-
My daughter loves fresh fruit thats all she would eat all day if I let her, same with veggies.my son on the other hand wont eat anything unless i make him which I do0
-
ya i guess... and for some veggies you can probably get away with it. I tend to buy whatever is in season, which makes it cheaper. also, ethnik supermarkets all the way.0
-
YES!!!! i find it amazing that candies advertise as fat free.
hello, candies, they are sugar, which turns into fat. blargh.0 -
I love Aldi. You can buy fresh produce there for pretty cheap. I eat much healthier on a limited budget by going there.0
-
as much as i would love to buy all fresh all natural and shop organic, its just not a possibility at this time.Myhusband is a car salesman he only gets paid for cars he sells in this econmy that can be tricky.it does worry me about health down the road but honestly i cant justify the idea of saving money on my future medical bills when it would mean trouble paying rent lights heat clothes on the kids back all of it.its not really an excuse just a fact of life at this time0

100% AGREE!!!! Nancy Clark writes good nutrition books. She has a masters in nutrition, and is a registered dietician. She knows her stuff! Educate yourselves!0
-
understood. budgets are what budgets are.
buying bio is not necessary IMO. only for the really bad things such as spinach, strawberries.
kwardklinck, ALDI or LIDL. all the way. you mean I can pay 99 cents for this pineapple instead of 1.99???? DONE0 -
1) some stores, such as Walmart, price match.... so bring in the Aldi, etc ad with the low-cost produce and you can grab it there for the same price (tell the cashier that you want to price match and give them the circular). Even though Wallyworld's produce isnt the greatest, its usually of MUCH higher quality and turnover than Aldi's is, in my experience. So yep, grab that 88 cent fresh pineapple and use the savings to get a container of cottage cheese to go with it! Woot!
2) i dare say most of us don't have "ethnic grocery stores" near us-- unless we live in or near a city. My nearest ethnic grocer is 50 minutes away and they carry mostly canned/dry goods and frozen things, not fresh. And i know this because my husband is Lebanese, so we have actively searched out authentic pita, etc.... Just saying, while its a great idea for ppl who have that resource, many ppl DON'T.
3) I agree that closer to nature = better for body, environment and society as a whole.... I am moving in that direction (have my own organic veggie garden, have a seasonal CSA share, etc) but its not a perfect thing. I am still prone to crap food more often than i should,... then again, i am not as bad as a lot of people and certainly not as bad as i used to be. Its all a process, right?0 -
I agree with your principles about healthy eating fitbot...
maybe it would be helpful if you opened your food diary so others can learn from your example!
From your photo's you are obviously a success story..
I for one only have 10lbs ish to lose and am struggling... and I eat fairly healthy, what exercise reigime do you follow....1200 cals a day? and do you eat back the calories you burn off??
x0 -
If I had 10 thumbs this post would get 10 Thumbs Up!0

trudypickles, hardly. I have 5 kilos to lose and have been slacking about my diet. The issue is not the junk, i dont really like it, it is more the partying and portion control. Turns out that eating a lot of healthy food stilll makes you gain weight.
I have been yoyoing with weight for years and it is precisely bc i really messed up my nutrition back in the day.0 -
Well your looking good in your photo I have cut down on the alcohol and meals out since joining here... so fingers crossed it pays off... how much is 5 kilos in pounds??
Keep up the good work x0 -
I agree with the discussion at hand but am curious as to what to eat other than the obvious fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc. Fitbot, what do you eat? Is it okay to eat cheese in small quantities or skip it altogether? Do you make healthy sauces for your foods or just eat them without sauce? Any help is greatly appreciated.0
-
You are absolutely correct! When losing weight you need to have a balance diet... weight loss itself robs the body of nutrients, so it's very important to replenish them.
I think what happens is that people splurge on unhealthy foods because they're too strict and craving them. Then, in order to save calories, they ditch the good stuff. Losing weight IS important and IS a healthy endevor, but you've got to do it right people!
I say this from my soap box, but I know that every has those slip up days. Just be sure to look at your food journal closely, and NOT just the NET CALORIES!:-)

thank you
some days are better than others obvs.
5kg= 11.0231131 lb, which IMO is more difficult to lose than having 15 kg to lose.
musicgirl99: cheese is my weakness, and full fat cheeses SHOULD be avoided when you are trying to slim down. lower fat such as cottage, farmer or mozza are good tho, if your system doesnt have a hard time digesting dairy. I find that most ppl can benefit by removing dairy from their diet altogether for some time. Give you digestion a break. For a while everytime I had milk I would get flulike symptoms. I removed all dairy from my diet for 2 weeks and then i was fine
as for sauces, I use a good quality olive oil, a little goes a long way, mixed with balsamico and lemon juice for salads and beans salads.
I like to have really basic foods, so most things just taste good with a little sea salt or nothing at all.
once you eliminate a lot of the additions you put on your food (ketchup, bbq sauces) you will discover the true taste of your food. And it is really amazing by itself. just takes some getting used to.
nothing beats tasting a perfectly ripe tomato for instance
another good sauce to use is natural yogurt with lemon and roasted garlic.
i am a sucker for hot sauce but have trained myself to not put it on all the things
Lately I have become mildly obsessed with coconut milk, I make delicious soups, curries and stews with it.
using herbs, specialy fresh herbs, can minimize the amount of additions you might need to put on things. Fresh basil and sage are incredible.
does that give you an idea?0 -
I have looked at some people's open food diaries and they make me really angry.
this is not a 'healthy lifestyle'. living off rice cakes and pretty much NO vegetables or fruits is not the way to go. Sure, you are losing weight but you are missing most of the vitamins, minerals and proteins that you should be getting. Unless you are doing this for a very short time to jump start your weight loss, this is NOT the way to go. Really calories restricted diet, with no healthy fats, no real protein sources, and no real vitamins (your multi vitamin is second rate benefits by the way) paired with intense working out = serious health issues in the future. You can say good bye to your joints.
PEOPLE EDUCATE YOURSELVES on nutrition!!!! meeting the calories you have been allotted is not enough.
ugh.
im going to go have a healthy breakfast now.
Here hee , i agree ! don't think mines purfect but i don't think its to bad0 -
That was extremely helpful, Fitbot. Thanks for the great ideas!0

I have a friend that had twins and she eats like this. I see it as an eating disorder and she says shes healthy and if shes not hungry then why eat. She is way more thin than shes ever been; too thin in my opinion for her height. She doesnt exercise and its really taken a toll on her looks. Its mind bottling. She will have a hot pocket for lunch and thats all. Or she will have an omelet for breakfast and skip lunch. I dont know... maybe Im just jealous that I havent gotten as skinny as Id like after a baby, but I rather look healthy and curvy then a bag of bones.0
-
ya let's see how happy she is when her hair starts falling out, and her nails keep breaking.
musicgirl: i just thought about some other things. adding sundried tomatoes is a great kick of flavour. Avoid the oil ones, if you are watching fat, and just buy the dried. shopping a couple into a salad is delicious.
also dont underestimate your beans. I usually have several cans / dried bags of all kinds of beans. kidney, cannellini, chickpeas. it doesnt stop at hummus. you can make a delicious spread w any bean. hand blend or fork mash w a little oil, some of the canned bean juice, and add anything you want: curry spice, paprika, rosemary, basil, cilantro etc etc etc. I have never made a bean spread that tastes the same as I always add whatever I have at hand. they are perfect for dipping things in and keep you full with a good kick of protein.0 -

I don't log my fruits and vegetables, only other things and recipes....Yet I eat approx 2-3 apples a day, multiple handfuls of organic baby carrots, a serving (or 2) of vegetable at lunch and dinner (which one depends on what I'm in the mood for -- sometimes raw, sometimes cooked), I have mushrooms a few times a week -- also unlogged, onions almost daily-- unlogged (I eat them like an apple lol)..., 3-4 banana's a week, and 3-4 oranges a week. all unlogged. I know the nutritional content of all this. Don't need to see it.
What I do need to see is other foods and how they stack up. That stuff gets logged. You may think that I'm not eating enough fruits an vegetables if you look in my diary (and no you can't lol-- it's because of people like you that mine is closed!) but I probably eat more than you.
My calorie total in a day? depending on my fitbit readout- 1800-2300. much of it coming from fruits, veggies, whole grains, and chicken. The rest coming from yummy stuff like lentil chips, the dreaded RICE CAKES (I love the mint chocolate ones yum!), peppermint chocolate luna bars (OMG- these are HEAVEN), deep chocolate vitamuffins, Almonds, cashews, cheese, maybe things you think don't belong in my 'diet'!
stop judging people and do your thing!!! Good luck0 -
'people like me'?
this isn't judging. This is concern.
Good for you for doing your thing the way that it is right for you. i wish you total success on your fitness journey.
but in this case, this topic doesn't even concern you.
I am not pointing fingers at anyone specific, simply giving some tough love and raising awareness that there are ppl on this board who will seriously screw themselves up in the long run.
Anyways, arguing on the internet is a completely useless waste of time, and I am done with defending my point which I still stand by 100%
