my mom just started mfp and ask this question is 8 oz on the scale the same as 1 cup? she was asking because instead of measuring 1 cup of watermelon balls she wanted to weigh out an 8 oz slice. so is it the same? sorry if this is a stupid question. this is not my area of expertise. thanks for your help.

That's not a dumb question at all! The measures are the same...however, it is much easier to use a scale vs a cup for solid food and liquids are easy both ways. Do you see what I mean?

It's going to depend on the food. 8 oz of watermelon weighed is actually 1.5 cups cubed measured in a cup...

1 cup is 8 "liquid" ounces. So, to answer your Mom's question, 1 cup of watermelon balls may not weigh 8 ounces. For example, if you put 1 cup of feathers on a scale they would weigh less than one cup of marbles. Hope this helps...

Yep, a fluid ounce and a cup are both measures of volume. The ounce the OP is referring to is a solid ounce, which is a measure of weight (I know, they don't make this stuff easy, do they? )
