I had a Dr. once tell me that I should eat the amount of calories I want to weigh. For example if I want to weigh 140lbs I should eat 1400 calories a day (200lbs would be 2000 cal day)...Has anyone else heard this?? Is this true? If so, on days I go over my limit and am in the red, is it ok as long as I am still under my goal number in the end?

I've never heard this. It seems to contradict everything we know.

I have heard that you should eat the maintenance calories for the weight you want to be... Maybe that is what they meant?

Yeah, I think that it's once you reach your goal weight, then you eat the amount of calories equal to your weight. I have heard that before. Also remember, that even though they think they do, doctor's don't know everything and can be misinformed too.

I get the concept. I tried it once....with the "advice" from my Doctor who I have since fired.

It worked for about 4 weeks before I fell off the wagon from being hungry.

Trying to exist on 1800 calories, when your then maintenance calories was 3000 just doesn't work.

It may work if you don't have a lot to lose. But when you have signifacant weight to lose I don't think it works.
  • That's exactly what I was thinking. Most doctors are not nutritionists! And if they knew what to really feed you to help nourish your body correctly, they wouldn't feed you the crap they do in the hospital! One documentary I watched called "Food Matters" stated that one of the biggest reasons people enter the hospital is because they're malnourished and that has led to something more serious. But once they leave the hospital, they're still leave improperly nourished.
