Congratulations..you just saved your own life...or at the very least the quality of your life! :flowerforyou:

You are soooo smart to do this now...regardless of those around you.

For the first few weeks especially avoid going into places where you might buy a pack...like the gas station. If you encounter smokers you cannot stand there and second hand smoke or you will cave.

In the beginning...until your receptors start to die...anything with smoke on it will trigger an urge. Even the headliner in your car holds nicotine and can trigger an urge. That is why you have to get away from it so you can be successful.

I quit smoking 6 years ago and did it in July for my youngest son's birthday.

He was 5 and will soon be 11.

He glows with pride knowing...I did it because he knew it was hurting me.

It will be the BEST decision you will make in your life.

Now I do Yoga and don't miss the deep breathing that smoking was all about.

The air I breathe is pure now...and my body and lungs are sacred  ...so are yours!!

You will be successful !!

Congratulations on a great decision!!! I quit 6 years ago, when my then 3 1/2 year old granddaughter reached for my cigarette in the ashtray. She said she wanted some too, like Grandma. That did me. I thought "What kind of a role model am I to my precious grandchildren."

I quit "cold turkey" while my husband continued to smoke for another 2 yrs - then he quit also. It was a very hard thing to do the first 3 months or so. But it is a decision I have never regretted. Even though I really enjoyed smoking. I know that I can never pick up that first cigarette or I will be back to smoking in a heartbeat and have to go through that hard time all over again. Just like an alcoholic can not have that first drink you cannot allow yourself even one cigarette.

But now I see someone smoking in a car beside me and it doesn't even interest me.

After dinner was the hardest. Get up from the table right away, start cleaning up the table and when you sit down have a piece of gum. That will give you something to replace the cigarette. I think I supported the gum industry during that time.

Just be very careful about snacking. Most of us tend to put on weight when quiting smoking. Smoking itself is an appetite suppressant so it is only natural for you to want to eat more. Plus you have the need to put something in your mouth. Also try red licorace. You can finger it like a cigarette and hold it in your mouth until the urge passes.

Try avoid situations where others will be smoking while you are going through this period. Your true friends will support you even if they are smokers. Secretly they wish they could quit but aren't ready yet.

We are with you. Hang in there and don't give in to temptation.

Congratulations! Best decision you ever made. You will be soooooo happy once you are over the worst.
I tried to quit several times before I finally really quit 10 yeras ago.
The first few days will be very hard. But after that at least you are over the physical withdrawal. Not that this makes it easier. Habits are very very hard to loose. Especially the bad ones
    Good luck to you

    Good for you!!!! :flowerforyou:

The 1st 3 days were the hardest for me.. I REALLY wanted that smoke. As the days went by it got easier, I had to relearn how to drive w/o a smoke, finish a meal w/o a smoke, get angry/stressed without having one. It's VERY difficult to quit but I really think cold turkey is the ONLY way to do it. If you love yourself enough, you'll want it bad enough and you'll put away the ashtray forever. The commercials they have on TV now with the guy that just stumbles in his morning routine because he is "re-learning" how to do everything w/o a smoke is SO true!

The real test was last weekend, I went to the casinos... I usually smoke like a chimney there... I really didn't even think about it although it was EVERYWHERE around me. I got back to the hotel room and could smell all of that smoke on me and was disgusted. That's when I knew I was really done for good.

It's almost been a solid month for me and I look back know and I can't even believe I used to smoke. My other half still smokes, he has since we met, so it was hard at first because he still smoked around me. He'll eventually quit when he's ready.

I can breathe easier, my moods are actually better, and my SKIN is SO much better!

You can do this! Stay strong! :drinker:
