I am a nurse and work 3 12 hour shifts (7am-7pm) a week. Also, I am in grad school part time so have 2 days a week at clinical rotations (so also like work 10 hours a day).
On my days off ( 2 a week) I make sure to work out, but 2 days a week is not enough.

I was wondering if you guys have any advice on getting in workouts during the other days?
I wake up at 5:30am to get to work by 7 and get home by 8:30pm..usually starving and exhausted...not in too much mood to work out.
HELP!!

I also work shift work but it's 7p-7a. I have started to get up an hour early and workout before I go to work. It is tiresome while doing it but when and I'm done, showered and ready for work it feels GOOD!!. I hope this helps.
  • I saw a good post today and this made me think of it. When walking down the hall try doing some lunges. You may look silly but you'll get some exercise in. Or after you go to the bathroom do a couple of jumping jacks. Any little thing through out the day to get your body moving is good.

yeah, I used to do that when I worked nights too...but now waking up at 4:30am..just seems so terrible.
But, you're right, that will probably give me some great results.
I just have to buck down and try.
  • How about just walking in place while a TV program is on... or something else someone told me for a tight hiney, is to do hiney squeezes while driving. You squeeze for a count of ten and release for a count of 10 -- I did it by signs on my way into the office for a long time...

I got some kettlebells for Christmas and have been doing some HIIT (high intensity for about 20-30 minutes) at home. Learned workout moves from you tube or on demand fitness tv.
Workouts don't have to be a huge time commitment if you do them regularly. It has taken me a while to realize this as I usually spend 1+ hour at the gym. I also do little stuff like taking stairs at work:)

I get up at 4:30 so I have time before I leave for work (at 6:15) to do a yoga routine or and exercise tape. I wake up in the middle of the night and, lately, have been turning the heater on so that the house is warm enough to stand getting out of bed....

I'm usually home by 7:45, and all I want is dinner and to sleep by the time I'm home and done with my homework.
