Does anyone actually know or can explain how one "kills" their metabolism? I have heard about it and was wondering if I have done that and how to get on track again IF at all possible.

All I do know is that the best way to rev up that metabolism is to feed it every 2-3 hours with healthy wholesome foods.

i think it refering to not eating enough calories! Your body goes into starvation mode! Hopefully someone with more knowledge will answer!
    BUMP!!
  • Thanks for replying to my post! I am going to do that, and will try healthy protein rich food. Any suggestions? I am trying to keep my carbs down.

I keep my carbs between 80-100 a day, and my protein around 125 a day.

I eat lots of lean protein as in Extra lean ground turkey, chicken, and fish. Makes lots of leftovers so you can nibble on them during the day as your snack.

    In a nutshell:

Eating too few calories for extended periods of time will cause your body to react as if you were facing famine. This means your metabolism slows way down. Another way of putting it is that your body has "gotten used to" a very low caloric intake.

If someone has slowed their metabolism in this way but starts eating a "normal" diet again, they will probably gain a ton of weight back because their metabolism is so slow. Their body is used to holding onto every calorie it gets, and so it'll pack all the sudden new calories on as fat. (This is why people who go through very low calorie 'starvation' diets often gain their weight back, and then some...)

If someone experiences a slowing of metabolism in this way, it is possible (but not 100%--and I'd recommend doctor supervision here) to "retrain" metabolism. Very slowly introduce calories gradually back into your diet (e.g., add 100 more calories on a regular basis, perhaps every 4 days or every week).
  • I believe this is what I have done after reading posts. I have been on the "Ideal Protein" diet and it supports Ketosis, however it is not working for me at all and I would much rather be healthy than starve and hurt my insulin/glucose balance and of course my metabolism - now and for the future.

I just don't know what foods to start introducing again... in fear of really messing it all up. I am worried that the healthy carbs in an apple will definitely turn to fat. I have really gotten myself in a pickle I think!

I would recommend gradually introducing more fruits, vegetables, and good fats (nuts, avocado) and proteins. The truth is you may gain a little weight at first, but keep in mind that for your health, that's okay.

This link may help you. It's very well-written and informative.
