Is there something in the settings that allows you a few extra or do you just count calories the same as you do if you aren't pregnant?

I have no idea of that but it isn't a good idea to try to lose weight while pregnant. I think your focus should be more on just maintaining a healthy diet. If you do that, then the baby gets the nutrients he/she needs and you wont gain alot of extra weight.

I would go to the doctor and get advice from them on how to proceed. It may be a case of changing your weight loss goal to a maintain goal giving you the extra calories I wouldn't have thought that you would continue as normal as I was told during pregnancy you needed at least 300 cals (the equivalent to one extra meal) more a day not double and eating for 2 which is often said

put it at maintenance for your weight and that should be plenty. The increase is only like 200-300 calories and that doesn't start I think till around your 2nd trimester.

you can count them by all means, its getting you into a good habit but set your goal to maintain while pregnant and consume what it gives you...pregnancy is not the time to try losing weight.

In the first trimester you dont need any extra but you do need 200-300 extra in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. and 300-500 extra if you breastfeed.

oh your doctor may recommend too many calories and you can gain faster than you need/want to. Your OB isn't a dietician but they can refer you to one.

I've also put myself on maintenance. I love having an idea of where I'm at daily (espeically in fibre and sodium). I gained 54 pounds with my first pregnancy (started at a healthy BMI). I lost it in 5 months with A TON of work. It'd be nice this time around to put on a healthier (lower) number.

    Thanks all. I'm clueless :)
Maintaining sounds like the best plan .. I wasn't planning on losing weight that's for sure, lol
  • As far as from what I've read in pregnancy books and through my doctor, our body only needs 100 extra calories in the first trimester, 200 in your second, and increased to 300 by your third trimester. I would suggest just talking with your doctor because everybody's bodies are different and he/she can direct you to the right eating plan. I would NOT suggest losing weight while pregnant (ex. by restricting calories), but practice a healthy lifestyle for you and your little one.
I was given the OK from my doc to exercise and I did my regular routines (kickboxing, Pilates, etc.) for the first 6 months, then slowed it down and used some pregnancy workout videos (Prenatal Pilates, yoga, and lots of walking). When I found out I was pregnant with my son, I completely changed my lifestyle around - in turn, I found that I only gained 22lbs during the duration of my pregnancy and later lost the last 23lbs after his birth. I also didn't experience as many problems that many pregnant women complain of, such as back pain, constipation, etc.
I owe my present commitment to healthy eating and consistent exercise to my little one! :)

    Good luck and congratulations!!

good for you! i gain so much with my last child it made me sick. if i ever get pregnant again (which will probably happen , hubby wants a boy ) I'll probably do what you are doing. i changed my life around so much it will be hard to go back
  • I think I've read new recommendations for overweight and obese moms to maintain their weights while pregnant. But by all means, talk to the doc! The recommendations to increase calories are based on the assumption that women need to gain weight, which many of us don't need!

I will definitely track everything if I ever get pregnant again, though I have a horrible feeling many British doctors would disapprove. I was borderline for gestational diabetes last time so I think I should be more aware. I would also track after, because being encouraged to overeat for breastfeeding's sake, and then just continuing that way, is part of where my extra weight came from.

Hope you get good advice and congratulations :flowerforyou:
