I JUST BOUGHT ME A NINJA FOR MY VALENTINES..LOL. NEED IDEAS FOR SOME HEALTHY SHAKES TO HAVE IN THE MORNING OR WHENEVER. THANKS

Replies

  • My favorite morning smoothie is:

    1/2 banana
1 pear (or apple, or orange, or cup of fresh pineapple or chunk of fresh coconut meat)
4-8 oz of orange juice (sometimes I squeeze my own, sometimes not). You can also use water or ice cubes.

Every once in a while I add berries instead, but usually when they're in season. Strawberry/banana is awesome during the summer.
You can also add a tablespoon of honey and/or ground flax meal.
When you get ready, start adding greens. I do 1-2 cups of spinach and 1/2 cup of romaine a lot of times, as well as some seaweed (wakame or dulse). Start small, though, until you get used to the taste. Usually you'll only taste the fruit unless you add too much too fast.

If it's after a workout or a between-meal snack, you might want to add some protein powder. I'm currently using Sun Warrior Protein, but if I use too much it tends to taste a little chalky. Only the vanilla, though, the chocolate is the BEST!
  • I guess it is more of a "Smoothie" than a "Shake" but:

Organic Plain Yogurt - 1 Serving
Organic Fat Free Milk - About 1/2 cup
Organic Frozen Fruit of Your Choice - 1 Bag (Cherries are best. Strawberries, Blackberries, Peaches are all great too!)

If you do it after a workout, you can put a scoop of Fruit Punch CellMass Creatine in too and it gives it a sour kick and helps with muscle recovery.

It's about 225 calories. Very filling. Great in the summer.

YUM! This is my kind of shake!
  • A favorite shake of mine consists of Vanilla or Chocolate flavored "Aria Whey Protein" (for women), 1 banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter, and unsweetened almond milk or soy milk.
    Yum!

For a quick Peanut Butter Shake, I toss a chocolate EAS (the low carb, 110 calorie container) with some ice and two tablespoons (45 calories) of PB2 (powdered peanut butter), and a splenda or two. Makes a yummy, super fast high protein, low sugar shake.

    Calories: 155 (110 from EAS and 45 from PB2)
    Total Fat: 4.5 g (3 g from EAS and 1.5 from PB2)
    Total Carbs: 9 g (4 g from EAS and 5 from PB2)
    Dietary Fiber: 4 g (2+2)
    Sugars: 1 g ( 0 g + 1 g.)
    Protein: 22 g (17 g + 5 g)

1 scoop of body fortress protein powder (cookies n cream is the brand I am using atm)
1 small banana or 1/2 a large one
    4-5 strabwerries frozen ones
1 tbsp flax seed (added fiber and great for the heart)
1 cup of very cold water alternatively you can use some ice
1/2 tsp cinamon for the antibacterial properties and the taste
    Blend till smooth
  • This makes 2 smoothies:

    -1 cup frozen strawberries
-1 cup all natural plain yogurt/ greek yogurt
    -1/2 cup of ice
-splenda to taste or a splash of apple juice
(you can also add a scoop of protein powder and drink for breakfast or do without protein and drink for dessert)

**mix in a blender and enjoy!

This should be fairly low in sugar...since the only sugar is in the fruit :)

My standard recipe for 2 smoothies is:

    •1/2 c plain non-fat yogurt
    •1 cup “milk” (skim/soy/almond)
•1 small or medium frozen banana **makes it smooth and adds texture and sweetness, but you can skip if you want**
    •2 tsp. flax seed
•2 scoops vanilla protein powder**I stick to vanilla b/c it is more versatile and you can always add cocoa if you want chocolate**
•6-8 ice cubes or to desired frozen texture

To customize them, you can add any of the following. And while I don’t recommend you use them all at once, the peanut butter/coffee/cocoa combo is one of my favorites. It does pack a punch calorically, but I guarantee you will be full for the morning!

    •Berries
    •Peanut butter
•Coffee (1/2 c brewed, but decrease your milk by same amount, OR I often just use a tsp. of finely ground coffee, but NOT instant)
    •Cocoa powder
•1/4 c pumpkin and some pumpkin pie spice (pumpkin Pie smoothie)
•Juice from 2 freshly squeezed limes (tastes like frozen key lime pie)

I’ll also occasionally use coconut water instead of milk if I am going for a “tropical” flavored smoothie.

I just started making one that I saw on "The Doctors".

1 C Frozen no sugar added raspberries
6 oz of Greek plain yogurt
splash of 100% no sugar added raspberry juice
    Blend and enjoy.
They said you can also add 1.6 oz dark chocolate (86% or higher cocao)
and 1/2 of nuts(pecans, almonds, walnuts)

I find I can do without the calories the chocolate and pecans add. I also use mixed berries no sugar added and any flavor of juice as long as it's 100% and no added sugar. It makes about 2 cups.

    Very good; very filling!
