Protein drink as breakfast

Does a protein drink or any drink with calories for that matter increase your metabolism? I know that each time you eat, your metabolism increases for a while; but does it work the same way with drinking. I have been eating a piece of fruit with my morning protein drink and want to know if it is necessary to consume the fruit too in order to get my metabolism going in the morning.

I can't speak for metabolism, because - frankly - i don't really get the science behind it all.
However, Since joining MFP on Jan 3, I've had a protein shake for breakfast six days a week, instead of my usual 2+ servings of a "nutritious" cereal (honey nut or multigrain cheerios, or kashi go lean crunch, usually), and 2+ servings of skim milk. I'm close to around the same calorie count, but am so much fuller, longer. I've also lost 18 pounds since then, so something is working (I'm also eating my other meals much more healthily [is that even a word] and exercising regularly, so I can't give the credit to the protein shake, necessarily)

I'd be curious to hear about the metabolism answer, though.

When I was seeing my nutritionist, she highly advocated protein in the morning and was a huge fan of protein shakes. She said I could add fruit to it, but it wasn't required. Protein is great in the morning because it starts you out with a calorie dense food that keeps you full and gives your body what it needs to function after the fast of nighttime.

I don't think it matters if you drink you breakfast or eat it, as long as you are making healthy choices. Calories are there either way. I do skakeology every morning, and because I have it as a meal I use fat free milk and 1 Tbsp of peanut butter...sooo good!
