running and weather

The weather is turning pretty lousy here for the night and the temperature is supposed to drop a lot through the night. It was beautiful this morning in the low 40s and down to teens probably tonight, which means that the roads will be quite slippery. I was thinking of doing my run tonight, but there are some white out conditions here and even with a high vis vest I don't think it is safe. Tomorrow may be way too cold and icy to venture outside. I do not have a treadmill. If I were to jog in place for the time that my plan is call for, do you think that would work? Thanks.

  • I used to jog up and down the stairs at work or at one of the parking ramps that had enclosed stairwells. Bear in mind, it wouldn't hurt you to take a couple of days off. It takes 2 weeks to lose any actual fitness. Who knows, it might help your performance.

Ooooh I like to run too and I know how you feel! I'm in the midwest and we've had lot's of bad weather so I now do fitness dvd's until the weather gets better. I love Jillian Michaels, her work-outs really get your heart rate up and are quick (about 30 minutes). It might be a nice diversion for you, you know how they always say to switch things up (coss-training). I would not risk running in bad conditions. An injury can really throw a wrench in your fitness plan. And oh yes jogging in place does burn the calories. It just may get really boring after about 3 minutes ;-P

I'm pretty good with the cold, but there was a day a few weeks back where everything was slicked in ice. I made it about 10 minutes and almost wiped out three times before I turned and sllllooowwwly walked back. I did my run later in the day then once it had warmed up and melted the ice. I'd go with other posters and try some cross training, or wait if you can. Stay safe!
