Returning FT4, Need Recommendation For Something Else

I am returning my Polar FT4 this week. Only have had it for 4 days, but giving me very high readings of 155bpm after just 30-60secs into the first warm-up round of Insanity, at end of workouts says I am staying in the 187s and higher for 90% of the time, which I know is not true or I would be about dead from working myself that hard. I have reset it twice and checked for interference, but nothing, still running very high. Can someone recommend a different HRM, please?

Why not just confirm it manually by doing a pulse check at the wrist or neck for a 10 sec count? You don't hear of many HRM malfunctions. Some people just have faster HR than others and if you're just starting out, it could definitely get up that high that fast.
  • I have the same HRM and have had no problems with it all. Sounds like the one you got isn't working properly. I've heard the FT7 is great too!

I have a Suunto M5, mainly bought it for the dual chest belt that would talk to our elliptical. Works as advertised although can be hard to read under certain light conditions. The womens version has dark text light background and is easier to read.

I agree with this. Check your pulse for 60 seconds to confirm.

    i def. agree with this.
  • When you're first starting to work out really hard, your heart beats really fast. Once you get in the swing of things, it takes longer. I agree with everyone else and check it manually. If you still aren't happy, I have the FT7 and LOVE it!!!

Your heart rate readings are on the high side, but they are by no means rare.

It is possible you are having some connectivity issues. I have found at times that the softstraps give erratic readings. I finally gave up on mine and went back to the old plastic strap.

i had very high readings in the 220s after trying on a new chest strap for the first time. my trainer switched out the transmitter with his and it worked fine after that. but the pulse check will be a good corroboration of whether your HRM is accurate or off.

I am positive that it is not working properly. After three workouts, it is saying my average hr is 187 and my high is 196. I am not even to the point of breathing extremely hard- at 187 I think I would be panting. I called ****'s Sporting Goods where I bought it and thankfully they are going to let me exchange it.

My parnter and I just had to ship ours off to the factory to be worked on (Polar FT40 s) because her HRM would only read my heart rate along with mine reading my heart rate. We got the coded transmitters so Polar said there is no reason it should be doing that. I hope they get them right because they were a lot of money.

Yes, the more I thought about it, the more I think you are having issues with the transmitter. Again, your numbers are not necessarily "abnormal", but the pattern you describe (along with your perceived exertion) sounds like the problem I had and that I have seen in some other Polars. Hopefully a replacement will work out better for you.

I would still do a manual pulse check, just to confirm.

Great advice- I will do a manual as well- I am trying to decide if I am going to switch out the Polar FT4 for another Polar Ft4 or go with a sportline
