A couple weeks ago I started a thread about profile pics (the main point of the post was people who try to pass themselves off as someone else- Brad Pitt especially) - well I got read the riot act about people worried about their privacy blah blah blah... since then I've read numerous threads about- what are your kids names? Where do you live? What do you do for a living? Am I the only one who thinks giving out this info- in the forums- is crazy?? What's next - what's the last four digits of your social security number?

I chose not to participate in those conversations - its one thing to see my face another to hand out my kids names, there are predators everywhere and quite frankly I am scared of them but I do have a real pic :) for those that do hand it out I think that is their business.

Call me paranoid, but i agree. People can piece together info with this stuff. Just watch the news, it happens all the time.

I'm probably a prime example of that guy that tells too much. Other than handing out my banking info or SSN, I am very open in all aspects of my life.

Maybe I am naive, but I really don't care. People either like me or they don't. I make no apologies. Never been taken advantage of, but this is really the only forum I open up in on the internet.

You have to do what you feel comfortable doing.

  • First off I doubt that there are many people from Anonymous running around MFP..I could be wrong..but I doubt it. They're too edgy and cool to give shizzit about how they look to the masses inorite?...or 4chan.

I live in Texas so basically you will have to get through me and others with guns first. Kthx!

P.S. I have zero qualms rendering people willing to hurt my children effectively dead.
  • Oh..this just occurred to me Wendi- but if anyone REALLY wanted to, you'd be easy to track down. They don't need your SS and if they wanted to steal your info..it can be done. I've known people in games whose identities (RL) have been revealed for the fun of it. Putting yourself on the internet in almost any capacity has some risk, period.

My information is very public. I have a freelance business and want people to be able to get in touch with me. I shared my blog with my friends, and anyone who looked at it knows my maiden name, which is what I use for publishing. There isn't anything on MFP I wouldn't want people IRL to know, and vice versa. Even if someone on here tracked down my address, they'd never be able to find my house. Even people who have been here before get lost!

My rule of thumb is to never put information online that you wouldn't want the world to see. I use the "mom" test to gauge things - would I want my mom to see this?

Well then I'm screwed because my mother doesn't even like it that I drink beer straight out of the bottle among a million other things LOL ;]
I get your point though of course lol.

My mom is pretty laid back so I've got a lot of wiggle room on this one...

I'm not too worried about identify theft. Nobody wants to be me.
  • I figure if anyone stole my identity they would be giving it back within an hour or so. Who would want to impersonate a married 50 year old woman living in rural Arkansas????? Hell, even I want to change several things about that.

I have had my cell phone visible since I created my facebook account and I have gotten only 2 drunk dials, much less anything sinister.

If they really want the information it is much easier to get than the internet. I love the MOM approach though!

Ive done it to someone before ...but this was a 12 year old girl giving out her first and last name, where she lived, and at some point her middle initial. Then she told us she was on the swim team and ALL this other stuff.
So to make a point I posted her address, a website with her swim meet times records and schedule, and her school name.

I deleted the post as soon as she realized what point I was trying to make...but yea.
Its none too hard to find things about people.

The most private person I know online and I used to play a "who can online stalk better" game. Once I knew his first and last name and what town he lived in I was able to find his cell number and where he'd lived all his life. Granted, he didnt post that online...I'd been to his house already...and thats a pretty special case.

But it doesnt really take much to find personal info about people online...and your profile pic isnt the thing thatll set it off

It is pretty crazy what lengths people will go to. And it is not just about identity theft. I have been a victim of cyberstalking and it is not fun. I choose what information I am comfortable sharing (hence no pics of me at the moment) and ignore the threads that are asking for more than that.

Hmmmm.... I wasn't really asking for your SS #! I was making a point.... which I don't think many of you got. I was just saying that all these people who attacked me a few weeks ago about not wanting to put a real profile pic of themselves due to internet privacy- if you search back you might be able to see the thread - I think it was Profile pic rant- suddenly thought it was ok to post their children's names, where they live, and where they work.

I am extremely open with what I do online- I use my real name on here, most of my life story is in my blogs and there are pics of my kids/my childhood home and my current home on flickr, facebook, snapfish and MFP. (which was one of the points I made in my profile pic rant thread) and my cell number is public on facebook.

I find it silly that my first thread went all for internet privacy and this one when the entire different way......where were all you guys a couple weeks ago???? ;-)

LOL Wish we were there for ya!

I agree with you to a point. I think it is all about someones comfort. I took me awhile to get comfortable posting pics of my short people on FB (took me awhile to get a FB account) and I am a geek by trade. However, my old neighbors were SUPER uptight about what they put on the internet. So being the super friendly neighbor I am i got into their router for them and locked it down... without them knowing... I also changed the admin password. I'm nice!

I like the way the internet is going now a days. I feel like we are all living in a small town where everyone knows your business, even though we lives thousands of miles apart. More connected and more disconnected at the same time... I think I may be rambling... :drinker: Time to make that phone call!!!

Can I tell you about my relationship with Jesus?

My name is Bill. Initial is C.
My kids names are not relevant.
What I do for a living is not relevant.
Ask me anything you like. I may or may not answer.

Two out of three of the kids would do one hell of a job! lol

The third would need legal representation.
