Does anyone here watch Alton Brown's "Good Eats" on Food Network?

Last year (maybe in the fall?), on an episode about oats, he made a drink I'd never seen before: refresco de avena. I bought the ingredients, made some, and loved it!

I want to make it again, but I don't know if I should, since I don't know how to count the calories in the recipe. (It's made by steeping oats, and using the liquid but tossing the spent oats themselves.) Of course, I thought that there was too much sugar in the recipe, so I'd definitely pare down the amount that's in the drink, but I still don't know how to figure for calories.

Here's the recipe (which can also be found at http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/refresco-de-avena-recipe/index.html):

Ingredients

* 1/2 cup piloncillo sugar, grated
* 1 quart warm water
* 2 ounces old fashioned rolled oats, not instant
* 1 small lime, peeled, body halved and reserved
* 1/2 teaspoon cardamom seeds, optional

Directions

Dissolve the sugar in the water in a large container. Steep the oatmeal, lime peel, and cardamom, if using, in the sugar water for 1 hour. Strain and serve over ice with a squeeze of lime juice.

Any ideas? Worst case, I could count the oats as if they were being eaten, but I'm not sure that would be accurate... :huh:

    Here's my thought...and by no means am I a chemist or a nutritionist...but...
    If the oats are steeped, I would think that whatever is IN the oats, would be steeped out into the liquid...the nutrients/calories.
    It can't be that much, really...I would just put it all in the recipe calculator, and go with it. I mean, worst case scenario...you're actually consuming LESS than you think :happy:

    Sounds quite interesting, thanks for posting!! :flowerforyou:
