I know my downfall is estimating my portion size. I have found many tools that help me estimate what 200 calories of food look like, what size 3 oz of meat is, etc. What non-scale, non-measuring cup tools or memory tricks do you use?

Instructions for posting pictures: ENCLOSE the web address of the picture (hint: the address should end in picture format: ".jpg" or ".gif") in brackets with the abbreviations and, except you will need to make them lowercase.

Example (you need to make the uppercase IMG into lowercase:

I love this web site: http://www.diet-blog.com/07/what_do_300_calorie_meals_look_like.php

This particular page shows you what a 300 calorie meal looks like and then breaks it down for you.

    Here's an example:

    meal10.jpg

    Breakfast - 290 Calories
    1 whole wheat English muffin
    2 pats low fat butter
    1 hard boiled egg
    1/2 cup of fruit
    8 oz fruit juice
    8 oz water

I love you! I swear I was just thinking about this today. No wonder I'm starving half the time, I'm miscalculating my portions at times.
Thank you so much for the visuals.

Is that water really coffee? And my guess is black coffee (no milk/sugar) is also 0cals (like water)?

Your portion sizes of now and then, says a lot! The visual references are great, if you can really do it. However, as a human, we are visual creatures and because of that, I'll stick to my food scale to keep me honest. Kudos to those that can visually measure.

Awhile back, I read a tip that I thought was interesting. Looking for cookbooks?? Look for OLD ones when portions were of normal sizes and not supersized, that we all think is normal now.

I have to measure with the scale. It was the only thing that broke my weight loss plateau. I believe I was subconciously making the portions bigger and convincing myself they were "within spec". I have gotten very adept at using that handy little device and I have been losing steadily at a 1.8 pound/week clip since early November last year.

    Cool pics, though...made me hungry!

I find all this calorie counting excellent for my maths LOL!!!

I tend to use my daily planner to calculate but often cross reference this with nutritional info on the pack of what I am eating.

(I am a relative newbie so I am just trying to educate myself on the things I eat most often so I get used to portion control) I am very discreet - OH didn't even realise I was being so religious about it until I told him!!

Also if in doubt I always weigh my carbs (I love carbs and can happily serve myself a massive portion). Digital scale cost nothing and again my OH didn't even realise I was weighing my portion of carbs until I told him!!!

Once I get a bit more used to it all I wont be as militant ha ha!

^That is very neat - I like the "textures" and that you can toggle between grams and ounces...!
  • I wonder, of all the information out there, how have people determined these visual tools? For instance, if 3 oz. meat, fish, and poultry = deck of cards, did someone/association/organization/etc weigh these and/or compare or are the majority loose estimations? I'm working on developing an infographic based on this topic. I have seen some on heart and lung association web sites but they all look rather generic. then i saw this web site: http://www.theportionplate.com/ ..It would be great if the plate showed ACTUAL sizes, or at least proportionate sizes. The cassette tape on that picture looks like a miniDV compared to the other items!
