PAIN!

So, I've had this problem for what seems like forever but I have never found a solution and I'm hoping someone has an idea.

When I walk faster than a leisurely pace I get burning, throbbing pain in the sides of my ankles. If I ignore it and walk through the pain, the top of my foot eventually goes numb. I'm EXTREMELY frustrated by this pain because it is holding me back from putting in really good workouts.

What I've tried: I bought really supportive New Balance shoes, I got orthodics, I always stretch before workouts and I've tried taping up my ankles.....none of this has made any difference to the pain.

PLEASE help! I'm willing to try anything!

Is there swelling associated with it? My feet go numb when I workout intensely, but there is no swelling and it goes away a few minutes after I stop. That can just be an effect of the type of pressure you are putting on your foot. When I first started working out on land my ankles would become sore very quickly. You have to use a lot of those muscles to push off the ground and maintain balance, so if they haven't been used a lot they might just not be in shape! I am one who believes a little pain can go a long way in getting you into shape, so if there aren't any other signs of tendonitis or nerve damage, I'd try to pick up the pace a bit and shorten the length of the walks, and then slowly add on more time and then more speed.

There isn't any swelling involved and the pain goes away after I rest a bit. I do a ton of walking and hiking so I would think my ankles would be in shape by now but I have the same pain as day one. I try and push through the pain hoping that it will go away once I'm warmed up but it never does..it just gets worse till I'm forced to slow down or limp. I've switched over to the Elliptical for now (even though my feet go numb on that too...but at least there's no pain.)

Have you tried talking to a doctor about this? It could be due to your weight or fitness, or it could be something more serious, like diabetes. It could also be something like gout, etc, which is complicated with weight. In any case, I'd see a doctor if you can.

Ya I have and they have no clue. I'm going to a new Dr. tonight so hopefully he'll have some ideas.
