a book or website or something to help me understand what to eat when. And how much of that I should have in my body by the end of the day?

    Eat Clean diet is great. I am following 80% of the time.

    There's a book called Body For Life. You can find it used for about $2. It's a very straightforward easy read, and doing the program is a lot of hard work, but man is it worth it.

    if I could make one small suggestion. Save the money on the book, and spend it plus some extra on a single appointment with a registered dietitian. If you do your research, and make sure they have experience with someone in your situation, they are worth a hundred times the cost of a book (IMHO, that's a literal statement, people spend thousands on diet plans every year, one $80 session with a dietitian will give them the right direction and the right food types and portion to eat).
  • I think the dietitian idea is smart. I have been following a low-carb plan (you can Google Atkins or low-carb and get a lot of recipe ideas; depending on which plan you do you aim for between 20-150 carbs/day) plus keeping my calories under 1750/day. I've lost 18 pounds in the last month and a half. It looks like you're doing something right if you've already lost 17 pounds! :o)

    I appreciate the responses. What I am looking for is not really a diet. I want to know how many g of specific vitamins, minerals, carbs, etc the body should have a day to be healthy. I'm not looking for low carb/low this or that, or anything about calories. The resources on this site are mainly about calories, some "guidelines" for what I'm looking for but no reasons, and I'd like to learn about them.

    I do plan on meeting with a dietitian and coming up with a diet with them, but I'd still like some reading material to really learn and understand how everything works.

    well, ok, if it's a supplemental thing. I usually refer people to the food pyramid for basic information. www.pyramid.gov
    they aren't always perfect on everything, but they come pretty close on most things. I'd start there, just spend a few hours perusing their pages, they have a lot of great links and articles about basic nutrition.

    but if you want to just read a book. Ahh, there's a lot of them out there, I wouldn't really know a specific one as I kind of did most of my initial research online.
  • skinny bit*h is a great book if you're looking for a clean diet...it explains how the body breaks down certain things including meat & how to stay healthy

    Thank you! I do love that website...I've used it a lot in trying to make my weekly menus.

    In that case, maybe Body for Life isn't the best recommendation. While it is a terrific book in terms of getting on the right track with nutrition, he never really goes into numbers. Not even calorie counting. It's more like "a portion of this, a portion of that". If you want some raw #'s, then you should probably look elsewhere. For me though, it made a dramatic impact because my diet was so poor previously.

    burn the fat feed the muscle is excellent. It is really big and long to get through, but really explains every single aspect of proper nutrition and exercise. It`s been rrenouned for quite some time too.

    I often refer back to it when in doubt.
